It’s spring of 2023 in the North Carolina Piedmont, and songwriter and singer M.C. Taylor leader of the band Hiss Golden Messenger is feeling alive. Joyful. Eternal, he might say. For the Grammy-nominated musician, whose albums have traced an internal path through adulthood, fatherhood, spirituality, and depression for well over a decade, this is something new. “The tunes on Jump for Joy were composed in free moments throughout 2022, a year during which Hiss was on the road more or less constantly,” explains Taylor.

Pete Levin’s 2010 CD release JUMP! continues to push the envelope of the traditional organ trio. The set is a collaboration with the remarkable guitarist Dave Stryker and legendary drummer Lenny White. They are joined on 5 of the 10 tracks by the dazzling percussionist Manolo Badrena. Pete knows how to feature his sidemen, but when it’s time for the Hammond to take charge, he does just that. In addition, the organ’s bass is mixed up front as an equal element. This is not your father’s organ trio! The set rocks and grooves hard; Smooth Jazz it ain't!

"Jump to It" is the twenty-eighth studio album by American singer Aretha Franklin, produced by Luther Vandross and released in July 1982. This album gave Franklin her tenth #1 R&B album - at the time it was the all-time record. It enjoyed a seven-week run at #1 on Billboard's R&B albums chart and also reached #23 on Billboard's main album chart. It was hailed as a comeback album, given that it provided Franklin with her first Gold-certified disc and Top 40 song since "Sparkle" in 1976. The title track, "Jump to It", was Franklin's first Pop Top 40 hit since 1976, and her first #1 R&B hit since 1977's "Break It To Me Gently". The infectious song was nominated for a Grammy Award. The album itself received an American Music Award for Best Soul Album in 1983.

Respected musician and producer Rupert Hine has sold many millions of records, particularly for his work on several Tina Turner titles and with 80's band The Fixx. Quantum Jump was an attempt to mix jazz rock influences (Weather Report, Miles Davis) and early 70's funk (Kool And The Gang, Tower Of Power) with an English song writing sensibility. Originally released on the Electric label in 1976, it contains all 11 of the cuts that first appeared on it, plus five bonus tracks.

1999 must have been deemed a banner year for the blues by someone at Capitol Records, issuing a passel of eclectic blues compilations in a month-long period on the EMD/Blue Note label. Jump Blue is a scholarly homage to the jump subgenre, characterized by sped-up high-hat tempos and lots of tight, fast horn work. This record jumps, too, all over the blues map of time and location, encompassing the vocal stylings of Dave Bartholomew ("Jump Children"), Helen Humes ("He May Be Your Man"), Peppermint Harris ("I Got Loaded," covered in 1984 by Los Lobos) and T-Bone Walker ("Teenage Baby"). Possibly the most eyebrow-raising cover: "A Fool in Love" by Ike and Tina Turner, recorded at the peak of their scorching funk career, certainly not known at the time for their contributions as ministers of jump blues. Other cool keepers from this disc series (which include a hearty helping of jazz and blues/jazz synthetics): Afro Blue, Blue Bacharach, Rhapsody in Blue, Blue So Funk and a half-dozen more.

Altoist Tab Smith, who first gained recognition with Count Basie's orchestra in the mid-'40s, became an unexpected R&B star in the early '50s, thanks in large part to his hit version of "Because of You." Between 1951-1957, Smith recorded 90 songs for the United Record Company, of which only 48 were issued. Delmark, in their CD reissue series, came out with all of the music in chronological order. This first release has the initial 20 (including the hit), and Tab Smith sounds fine on the sweet ballads, blues, and concise jump tunes. The backup crew includes trumpeter Sonny Cohn, tenor Leon Washington, and either Lavern Dillon or Teddy Brannon on piano.
