Through the gospel-impassioned fury of his vocals and the complex polyrhythms of his beats, Brown was a crucial midwife in not just one, but two revolutions in American music; he was one of the figures most responsible for turning R&B into soul and he was, most would agree, the one figure most responsible for transforming soul music into funk. B.J. Thomas was one of the most consistent - and consistently good! - purveyors of American pop for more than a decade. A major chart star for most of the second half of the 1960s and through to the mid '70s, B.J.seemed to always be able to anticipate the needs of the US Top 40 at every career twist and turn, and his great records like Hooked On A Feeling and Mighty Clouds Of Joy were ever a positive enhancement to the AM radio waves of their time (as they are to oldies FM radio stations across the USA in the 21st Century). For around eight of those years, B.J. recorded exclusively for the go-ahead, New York-based independent Scepter Records, and its his best recordings for Scepter that are the subject of Ace's first-ever UK anthology to seriously appraise, and afford historical significance to, Billy Joe Thomas.

The average fan is better off with Anthology, which covers almost all of Marvin Gaye's true classics. But for those who want the hits and then some, and have the budget and interest to go further, this four-CD box set is an excellent retrospective of his career. The 89 tracks include all the chart hits (both on his own and with Mary Wells, Kim Weston, Tammi Terrell, and Diana Ross) and many interesting B-sides, album tracks, and misses.

This fact alone makes the new double CD concert: Dear Mr. Fantasy: Featuring The Music Of Jim Capaldi & Traffic all the more poignant in its release. Put together by the drummer’s wife Aninha, this concert was held at London’s famed Roundhouse and features ex-Traffic mate Steve Winwood, Pete Townshend, Joe Walsh, Bill Wyman, Jon Lord and Paul Weller. Fronting a ‘backing band’ that includes Andy Newmark (heard from too little these days, as far as I’m concerned) Ray Cooper, Mark Rivera, Simon Kirke, Dave Bronze and Paul ‘Wix’ Wickens, the ‘stars’ take the stage to perform various Capaldi-penned tunes along with the more famous Traffic tunes he co-wrote.
