Jimmy Hamilton And His Orchestra - Swing Low Sweet Clarinet (1960/2019)
FLAC tracks | 35:23 | 120 Mb
Genre: Jazz / Label: Everest Records

"Duke Ellington recognized Jimmy Hamilton as both a talented clarinetist and composer and featured him extensively during his quarter century in the band. Swing Low Sweet Clarinet, a 1960 session for Everest, features the clarinetist leading a small group drawn primarily from Ellington's band, including tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves, Booty Wood and Britt Woodman (heard on baritone horns instead of their usual trombones), bassist Aaron Bell, and drummer Sam Woodyard, while adding non-Ellington musicians Jimmy Rowles on piano, Dave Wells on baritone horn, and John Anderson on trumpet. It's not surprising that Hamilton draws from Ellington's vast repertoire, covering "Do Nothing 'Till You Hear From Me," "In a Sentimental Mood," and the lesser-known ballad "I Didn't Know About You" but with fresh approaches, especially with his use of the three baritone horns to add warm backgrounds. Hamilton's off-center approach to the old chestnut "Ain't She Sweet" is anything but ordinary. His originals include the exotic "Tempo de Brazilia" and "Taj Mahal."

Genre: Folk / Label: Columbia

Four years before Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel (who would have been "Paul and Artie" in any case) brought their folk-based vocalizing to Columbia Records, the label was host to a rather different duo with the same given names: Art & Paul. Art Podell and Paul Potash were young denizens of the middle-late 1950's NY-folk scene when they decided to start performing together in Greenwich Village. Both Potash and Podell were skilled guitarists and talented songwriters, and Podell was a particularly talented arranger. One of the more distinctive duos working out of NY, they were signed to Columbia Records in 1960, at a time when record companies were starting to look for the next Kingston Trio, and Columbia was hoping for lightning to strike again, as it had for Terry Gilkyson and the Easy Riders with "Marianne."

Best Of The Sixties is a 1990 compilation of some of the best music from the 1960's with a few exceptions. While "House Of The Rising Sun" is credited to Animals singer Eric Burdon, it is actually an Eric Burdon solo track without the band. Mary Wells' version of "My Guy" is something that sounds like it's straight out of the disco vaults. Tommy Roe's "Dizzy" is not the original, nor is Sam & Dave's "Soul Man" and the same can be said for a few others. This was released by Fox Music Consolidated Ltd.

Franklin's Columbia years are hard to summarize in compilations, even fairly extensive ones such as this two-CD set, which includes six previously unreleased tracks and one previously unavailable alternate take among its 40 songs. In part that's because she explored several different styles during this era without really finding a home in any of them, in part that's because the quality of the recordings themselves were so erratic, and in part it's because Sony keeps putting out compilations that duplicate each other to a fair extent. About half the songs on this anthology, for instance, also appear on the most comprehensive previous Franklin/Columbia retrospective, Jazz to Soul. On its own merits, this is a fair summation of some of her more notable Columbia recordings, slightly more pop-oriented in its track selection than Jazz to Soul, and at least including something new in the handful of unissued numbers.

This is a great combo of two albums by Della that works well together. "Swing Slow" is a group of standards given Della's touch that will keep you entranced. And "Cha-Cha-Cha" is just that–-standards set to cha-cha-cha. Lots of fun and great listening. Her version of "Whatever Lola Wants" cha-cha is steamy and sexy. If you like Della Reese then this is for you. It's a collectors' item and a great reminder that the star of "Touched By An Angel" was (and still is I hope) a great American vocalist with no fear of expressing herself. This CD is a wonderful vintage example.

This is classic material. 4 CD's loaded with one song after another of magic guitar playing. The sound is terrific and Mary Ford adds great vocals to many of the cuts although there are also many instrumentals. The years covered here are from 1948 - 1957 and includes some portions of the Les Paul Radio Show with songs and dialogue between Les and Mary. In addition to being a guitar genius, Les Paul was also an inventor who developed a variety of techniques still used today (such as multi-tracking) and they are on display in this set of music. Wonderful music, great sound, terrific vocals. This is music made in a different era before rock took over the airwaves. There is nothing in your face about it and there is a 40's feel to the pop tunes but great music stands the test of time and this certainly qualifies. Highly recommended.
