The concerto, with its soloist thrilling and moving an audience with the support of an orchestra, has been one of the most popular musical forms for over 300 years. Now imagine a concerto for two instruments: twice the virtuosity and twice the expression! While Antonio Vivaldi was one of the first composers to investigate the possibilities of this format in his more than 500 concertos, he didn’t compose a single one for double bass. This recording rectifies Vivaldi’s omission and offers arrangements of two of his double concertos as well as one of his best-loved arias, "Vedrò con mio diletto" from the opera Il Giustino. A little more than a century later, Giovanni Bottesini, the Paganini of the double bass, captivated first Europe and then the rest of the world, displaying a dazzling virtuosity in his numerous compositions that highlight the unique qualities of the instrument.

While not many listeners in the present day may remember the name Julius Klengel, his name was virtually synonymous with the cello less than 100 years ago. The majority of Klengel's career centered around either performing – as principal cellist of the Gewandhaus Orchestra, as a chamber musician, or as a soloist – or pedagogy. In fact, he was one of the most sought-after teachers of his time, and his numerous students include the likes of Feuermann and Piatigorsky. Klengel also composed a great deal of music for the cello, especially pedagogical works. His performance works, including the three concertos heard on this disc, are infrequently played. Compositionally, they are generally enjoyable works but not terribly original or moving.

The Orchestre National de France has been associated with French national radio broadcasting for much of its career. It also lives up to its name, giving concerts around France in addition to those at its home venues in Paris. The Orchestre National de France, or ONF, was founded in 1934 by Radio France as the Orchestre National, giving its first concert at the Paris Conservatory. Its first conductor was Désiré-Emile Inghelbrecht. In 1939, many of the orchestra's musicians were conscripted into the French army. The rest of the group moved to the city of Rennes but disbanded when that city was bombed.

After her first solo record, E il violoncello suonò, Hanna Salzenstein, in this second opus, gets on with the story of the emergence of the solo cello in Italy in the early 18th century, highlighting the concertante repertoire for solo cello and orchestra in a period immediately following the birth of the concerto itself.
