Following up her standards-focused 2017 debut A Social Call, Dallas-born, New York-based singer Jazzmeia Horn offers mainly originals on Love and Liberation, boldly stepping ahead as an artist. Along with her deep and effortless vocal expression and turn-on-a-dime scat solos, she proves herself an engaging writer with a lot to say at any tempo or feel. The breakneck bebop number “Searchin’” and the luxuriant ballad “Legs and Arms” are among the highlights. Pianist Victor Gould, bassist Ben Williams, and drummer Jamison Ross provide stellar backing, with Ross delivering strong vocals in tandem with Horn on the George Duke/Rachelle Ferrell cover “Reflections of My Heart” (and the intriguing spoken-word “Only You,” which directly precedes it). Tenor saxophonist Stacy Dillard and trumpeter Josh Evans add spice along the way, while pianist Sullivan Fortner, brimming with old-school stylistic wisdom, lends his brilliant touch on four tracks.

The Motown Sound gets a distinctly 60s UK makeover. It may seem unbelievable in 2019 but there was a time when Motown was not a household name in the UK. Around 40 Motown singles were released here between 1959 and 1964, not one making a dent in our charts until Mary Wells scored a Top 10 hit with ‘My Guy’. After that Berry Gordy’s company began to slowly make a greater impression on British pop fans but even then a full three years went by before Motown’s flagship acts routinely made the UK Top 20.

The Later Years 1987-2019 is an explicit sequel to The Early Years 1965-1972, the 2016 box set that rounded up nearly all the loose ends and detours from the first era of Pink Floyd, the fearless period when they were figuring out what the band could do. The Later Years covers a different time, when their most pressing challenge was demonstrating that they could thrive artistically and commercially without the presence of Roger Waters, the bassist/songwriter who charted Floyd's direction between 1973's Dark Side of the Moon and 1983's The Final Cut. In the parlance of these deluxe box sets, that decade amounts to "The Middle Years," a period far more prolific than 1987-2019, when the group released just two studio albums along with two live albums and a posthumous project that didn't arrive until 2014, by which time the group had largely been inactive for 20 years…

The notion of Chrissie Hynde recording a jazz album initially seems odd, even incongruous. Hynde admitted as much in the promotional cycle for the release of Valve Bone Woe in 2019, calling herself a "devout rock singer," but revealing that the idea of a jazz album appealed to her because she has a "penchant for cover songs." That much is true. Ever since the first Pretenders album, she's managed to sneak other people's songs into LPs and set lists, but Valve Bone Woe is her first collection primarily devoted to covers. If its existence is a bit of a surprise, it is, perhaps, less of a shock that Valve Bone Woe isn't strictly jazz. Hynde weaves covers of the Beach Boys ("Caroline, No"), Nick Drake ("River Man"), and the Kinks ("No Return") among versions of songs by Frank Sinatra ("Hello, Young Lovers"), John Coltrane ("Naima"), and Charles Mingus ("Meditation on a Pair of Wire Cutters").

Gary Chandler (guitar and vocals) and Stephen Christey (drums and percussion) founded English neo-progressive rockers Jadis in the late 80's and quickly scored some prestigious opening slots, including a coveted stint supporting progressive rock giants Marillion on their 1988 tour. The following year found them headlining London's legendary Marquee Club and recording their first demos with the help of Marillion guitarist Steve Rothery, but repeated line-up changes would force them to wait two more years before beginning work on their debut album, More than Meets the Eye…

With Quantum Pig’s combined cultural and philosophical influencers, it should come as no surprise that their debut album is equipped with a stark, relevant and thought-provoking message. "To paraphrase Abraham Lincoln, this is a record that is about disenthralling ourselves from the dogmas of the past so that we can think and act anew," says Mark Stevenson, the band’s principal lyricist. "Songs of Industry and Sunshine is about the transition from the old world dying around us, to the new one that must emerge…

22 years since the last studio album was released (Time Factory on Delerium Records) and nearly 30 years since it was recorded, Nukli are releasing a full 80 minutes of gloriously proggy psychedelic rock. Taking you on a journey via time machine, through the free festivals of old, the souks of Morocco whilst dancing the spiral and proving that there is another way of life! After recording the backing tracks at Foel in 2012, an initial attempt at finishing the tracks ground to a halt with unsatisfactory results. With a great supply of wonderful live recordings available to the band, it made sense to put out live albums, which distracted from the fact the the studio recordings still weren't finished. It was only towards the end of 2018 that Peter Out pushed the project forward, working relentlessly, like a man possessed, to finish the mixes. Mark Huxley came up with the artwork evoking album covers of old. Things were finally coming together!

This exceptional 1978 album is significant for at least two reasons. Outside Looking In marks the first pairing of Jimmy McGriff with alto saxophonist Hank Crawford. And it also marks the last time McGriff worked with producer Sonny Lester, who guided the organist’s career for the previous dozen years. Despite being the typical LRC disco production (helmed by Brad Baker and Lance Quinn), Outside Looking In also contains some fine period music (Quinn and Baker’s "Tapioca" and Bob Babbitt’s "Dust Pan"). Overtop an array of electric keyboards and thumping electric bass, there is consistently notable soloing from McGriff (who takes at least one traditional organ solo on all pieces except "Midnight Boogie," a feature for his synthesizer and electric piano), Crawford and guitarist Jimmy Ponder (adding a funky Wes Montgomery-like touch to the proceedings)…
