38 Special is an American rock band that was formed by neighborhood friends Don Barnes and Donnie Van Zant in 1974 in Jacksonville, Florida. The band's first two albums had a strong southern rock influence. By the early 1980s, 38 Special shifted to a more accessible arena rock style without abandoning its southern rock roots. This shift helped to usher in a string of successful albums and singles.
This is very good sounding live show by Southern AOR Rockers 38 Special. This CD has also been released as "Memphis 1988".

Drivetrain is the twelfth studio album by the southern rock band 38 Special, released in 2004. Eight of the album's 12 songs were co-written by long-time collaborator Jim Peterik. With Lynyrd Skynyrd off the road from the late '70s through the early '80s, an enormous void was created in the Southern rock genre, and such similarly styled acts as .38 Special came to the rescue. Although the group peaked during the early days of MTV ("Hold On Loosely," "Caught Up in You," etc.), .38 Special continued to issue albums, albeit on a less regular basis, throughout the '90s. But after the release of 1997's Resolution, the only new albums to surface from the band were a live set (1999's Live at Sturgis) and, quite oddly, a Christmas set (2001's A Wild-Eyed Christmas Night).

50 years together. 20 million records sold. More than 15 albums of guitar-driven Southern rock stacked high with hits like "Hold On Loosely," "Caught Up In You," "If I'd Been the One," and "Second Chance." Milestone marks 38 Special’s first studio album in over 20 years and showcases their platinum-selling blend of muscle and melody. Featuring snarling guitars, anthemic hooks, and fresh collaborations—including duets with Pat Monahan (Train) and co-writes with Jim Peterik (Survivor) and Randy Bachman (BTO, The Guess Who)—this album is a modern Southern rock statement from one of the genre's enduring voices.

The recruitment of Jim Vallance behind the drums and bass player Mike Porcaro didn't bring .38 Special the kind of help the band was looking for with 1986's Strength in Numbers. Following a string of convincing albums (Wild-Eyed Southern Boys, Special Forces, Tour de Force) during the early '80s, the band decided to take a couple of years off before returning to the studio, but after doing so, it seemed that the bandmembers had left their knack for producing affable radio songs behind them.

38 Special is a prime example of an AOR band with deep roots in Southern rock. The band hails from Florida, and vocalist Donnie Van Zant is the brother of none other than Lynyrd Skynyrd's Ronnie and Johnny Van Zant. The group's 1982 album, Special Forces, included the flawless Top Ten rocker "Caught Up in You," which injected the mainstream with a shot of much-needed grit. That album's follow-up, 1983's Tour De Force, upped the ante, showing the band's skills at their peak. Propelled by the effortless blend of melody and power stirred up by Van Zant, vocalist/guitarist Don Barnes, guitarist Jeff Carlisi, bassist Larry Junstrom, and drummers Steve Brookins and Jack Grondin, Tour De Force is loaded with irresistible hooks.

Bone Against Steel is the ninth studio album by the southern rock band 38 Special, released in 1991. It was their last album until their 1996 comeback and the last album to feature the vocalist and keyboard player Max Carl. The album itself was a modest commercial success and only reached #170 on the Billboard 200 album chart. However, the single "The Sound of Your Voice", was a major hit, and one of three songs co-written by Survivor's Jim Peterik for the album. The song, with a vocal hook in the chorus very reminiscent of Survivor's "I Can't Hold Back", reached #2 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart and #33 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the second of the three Peterik songs, "Rebel to Rebel", only reached #30 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.

Flashback: Best of .38 Special is a terrific compilation of the Southern rock group's biggest hits, including "Caught Up in You," "If I'd Been the One," "Back Where You Belong," "Wild-Eyed Southern Boys," and the non-LP soundtrack contribution "Teacher Teacher." Since Flashback was released in 1987, it doesn't contain their biggest hit, 1989's syrupy ballad "Second Chance," but it remains a comprehensive overview of their best moments, and makes a convincing case that they were the last great Southern rock singles band.
