We announce the release of Christian Löffler’s album Parallels: Shellac Reworks as part of the DG initiative The Shellac Project. The German conceptual artist and composer reworks tracks by some of the greatest composers who ever lived, including J.S. Bach, Beethoven and Chopin and steps away from well-trodden paths to create his own interpretations of classical greats, opening up a welcome dialogue between past and present. Christian Löffler has become internationally renowned for his strain of emotional electronic music, and in bringing these illustrious composers into his realm he is not only paying tribute to them but also re-inserting their music into contemporary discourse: “I hope my interpretations reach out to people who wouldn’t usually listen to the old masters. There is so much strength, youth and wildness inside this timeless music.”

Electronic/techno producer Christian Löffler specializes in emotive, melancholic music that feels isolated yet strangely relatable. Löffler started taking an interest in music at age 14, although instead of picking up a guitar, as his friends did, he dove straight into programming and arranging music on his computer. A lot of his sound is owed to the area he was brought up in, and where he spends most of his time: the Darß peninsula in Germany.

The Capricornus Consort Basel, highly praised by critics for their sensible interpretations on their recordings of Erlebach, Graupner and Manfredini, now presents instrumental music of the early Classical period. Franz Xaver Richter 1709-1789 was one of the most important members of the so-called 'Mannheim School', based at the Mannheim court, the orchestra of which was said to be the best of its time. Prince-Elector Charles Theodore gathered the best singers and instrumentalists in his residencies in Mannheim and Schwetzingen. His generosity meant the Stamitz Family, Christian Cannabich, Charles Joseph Toeschi, Ignaz Holzbauer and Franz Xaver Richter all contributed to the development of the Mannheim style and thus exerted considerable influence.

This jam-packed collection boasts ten new remixes of tracks from Max Cooper's 2016 album Emergence, a largely downtempo set inspired by his live audio-visual performances. As you'd expect, many of the reworks are dancefloor focused, with Vessels, Joe Farr (whose distorted, industrial-tinged techno take on "Panned" is a definite highlight) and techno veteran John Tejada all delivering standout interpretations. These fine remixes are accompanied by similarly impressive rubs that don't strive as hard for club plays, with Hidden Orchestra's symphonic version of "Symmetry" and Tom Hodge's intricate, melodious rework of "Cyclic" standing out.
