Benny's a hipster, moving in and out of Manhattan's beat scene, aimless, maybe close to trouble. His sister Lelia, who looks less African-American than White, is vulnerable and about to fall in love. Hugh, their older brother, is a struggling singer whose agent, Rupert, may be the only person with faith in his talent. The story moves back and forth, like jazz, among the three of them and what seems at first to be separate lives. Lelia meets Tony, and lets herself hope this is true love. Then he meets Hugh and prejudice gives Tony an excuse to cut and run. Can family and friendship bring solace for her hurt, purpose for Benny, and belief in Hugh? Is life more than shadows?

Le rêve de retrouver un vieil oncle en Amérique, tout le monde l'a fait, mais retrouver ses ancêtres, ses vraies racines, cela peut prendre une vie. Alors s'adresser à une agence spécialisée… quoi de plus normal pour Baruk, Andrew, Irène ou Samuel, qui vivent aux quatre coins du monde depuis deux générations. Ces gens, comme beaucoup d'autres, ont perdu les leurs pendant la révolution ou la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. C'est à ce moment précis que leur chemin croise celui d'Edik Letov, jeune aventurier, qui trouve là une occasion de s'enrichir en persuadant les habitants d'une petite ville d'Ukraine de jouer, juste pour une semaine, le rôle de ces familles tant recherchées. Après un casting méticuleux, Edik crée une famille imaginaire pour chacun des quatre prétendants et organise leurs retrouvailles à Golotvine.

(A young con artist Edik played by Konstantin Khabensky (Night Watch) with rather nice personality gets in trouble gathering long lost foreign relatives together. Wealthy and middle-class émigrés who have made it in the new lands (the Americas, Israel) return to the homeland, to the roots from which they were severed. The implicit motivation for their return is the search for spiritual nourishment, and so the émigrés sacrifice the material comforts of their villas and Western civilization to journey to their ancestral past, the timeless village of Golotvin. They believe that here they will be able to complete themselves by reconnecting with their heritage. All for the nominal fee of Edik, a free agent and a small time crook who orchestrates an elaborate crime with the intention of earning a pile of money by tricking a group of pilgrims into thinking that a small village is their homeland and its inhabitants are their long lost relatives. The levels of deception multiply quickly…)

In 1934 Paris, trained coloratura soprano Victoria Grant, a native Brit, can't get a job as a singer and is having trouble making ends meet. She doesn't even have enough money for the basics of food and shelter. Gay cabaret singer Carole 'Toddy' Todd may befall the same fate as Victoria as he was just fired from his singing gig at a second rate club named Chez Lui. To solve both their problems, Toddy comes up with what he considers an inspired idea: with Toddy as her manager, Victoria, pretending to be a man, get a job singing as a female impersonator. If they pull this scheme off, Toddy vows Victoria, as her male alter ego, will be the toast of Paris and as such be extremely wealthy. That alter ego they decide is Polish Count Victor Grazinski, Toddy's ex-lover who was disowned by his family when they found out he was gay. The Count auditions for the city's leading agent, Andre Cassell, who, impressed, gets him a gig performing in the city's best nightclub.
