Kuniko Kato, who goes by the single name Kuniko, is an emerging Japanese marimba and vibraphone virtuosa who stirred up considerable attention with her 2011 release kuniko plays reich. Cantus, which is curiously named, expands on the transcription ideas developed for the earlier release. Kuniko sets out to expand the sonic vocabulary of her percussion instruments through the use of various mallets and strike techniques. This is an extremely intriguing idea, for latter-day developments in minimalist music have involved experiments with extending its range without losing its basic aesthetic.
This new recording from Australian label ABC Classics presents beautiful piano music by Vasks, Gorecki, Part and Pelecis - some of it with orchestra, some of it solo piano. The Pelecis concerto that opens the album is almost completely unknown, and stunning. Tamara-Anna Cislowska’s recordings have won, amongst others, the 2015 ARIA Award for Best Classical Album and Gramophone Magazine Editor’s Choice.
The two main violin sonatas on this 2025 release share a grim quality that has perhaps resulted in their being less often performed among the chamber output of the two composers, Poulenc and Prokofiev. There is nothing in the music that explicitly refers to war, yet there is a tense quality, especially striking in the sonata of the normally gallant Poulenc, that surely marks their origin during World War II, and violinist Paul Huang ominously says that, in addition to the title of Arvo Pärt's Spiegel im Spiegel, the music "is almost like a mirror image of the time we are living in now."
This album, titled after one of Arvo Prts most beloved works, is a meditative tribute marking the composers 90th birthday on September 11, 2025. On Spiegel im Spiegel, music becomes a mirror: between composers, across centuries, and within the listener. At its heart are three works by PrtFratres, Da pacem, and Spiegel im Spiegeleach embodying his signature language of stillness and spiritual clarity. They are framed by pieces that resonate with his sensibility: Olivier Messiaens contemplative Louanges, J.S. Bachs luminous Sonata for Viola da Gamba, and Alfred Schnittkes brooding Cello Sonata. Performed by Onut Grainyt (piano) and Edward King (cello), with the Aidija Chamber Choir led by Romualdas Grainis, this collection invites deep listening. From Bachs elegant counterpoint to Messiaens timeless devotion, each work reflects a shared search for the eternal. A sonic meditation on peace, prayer, and presencethis is music that mirrors the soul. Recorded at Studio Residence Paliesius, May 2025.
