The ultimate collection of the complete music of J.S. Bach. Having all of Bach's music at my fingertips is a dream come true. This astonishing collection of music is a historic event. Teldec has compiled an excellent collection of all the works of J.S. Bach, from well-known to the obscure, performed by a wide variety of highly respected musicians. There are many, many treasures included in this collection, for example: the cello suites performed by Nikolaus Harnoncourt now on cd for the first time. And the 4-cd set of chorales is stunning.

CBS/Sony Classical has been accompanying superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma for decades on his journey through the unsurpassed works written for his instrument by Johann Sebastian Bach. The label is now pleased to announce the release of important landmarks from that journey, Yo-Yo Ma Plays Bach, on a single CD. Ma's first recording of Bach's six Solo Suites, which went on to win the Grammy® for "Best Classical Instrumental Performance" and is represented here by the Sarabande from the Sixth Suite, took place in 1982. In the same year, Yo-Yo Ma recorded Bach's complete sonatas for viola da gamba with harpsichordist Kenneth Cooper which was hailed by Gramophone as "intelligent and expressive."

The earliest lists of Bach's compositions are given by his biographers, starting from his obituary which gives a list of instrumental works printed during the composer's lifetime (from Clavier-Übung I to The Art of Fugue), followed by a list which groups other types of compositions he wrote. The first separately published biography of the composer, by Johann Nikolaus Forkel, follows the same setup: its ninth chapter first lists printed works (adding four-part chorales that were published in the second half of the 18th century), followed by a rough overview of the unpublished ones. In the first half of the 19th century more works were published, so the next biographies (Schauer and Hilgenfeldt in 1850) had more elaborate appendices listing printed works, referring to these works by publisher, and the number or page number given to the works in these publications. So, for example, the Prelude and Fugue in E-flat major can be indicated as "C. F. Peters Vol. III No. 1", or any of the variants.

The first volume in a series devoted to Bach's famous Cantatas with Ton Koopman and the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir. The project is chronologically structured, so this first volume includes Cantatas composed at Mulhausen in the years 1707 and 1708. It contains four great and well-known masterpieces which convey the mastery and maturity of the young Bach, aged 22 at that time.

Buxtehude the organist expanded his activities as a vocal composer in an unprecedented way. He left a particular mark as a composer of large-scale oratorios («Abendmusiken»). His oratorios have not survived, but the many other vocal compositions that have come down to us represent a substantial body of works. These include in particular larger and shorter chorale settings of various kinds, sacred concertos (i.e., motets with differentiated instrumental accompaniment), arias, and multi-movement structures consisting of concertos, arias, and chorales that were later referred to as cantatas. This album (as did vol.V) presents a mixed selection of works in the above mentioned genres: arias, concertos, and – as a composite of the two – cantatas.

Veteran Dutch historical-performance specialist Ton Koopman has set himself the task in his seventh decade of recording the complete compositional output of Dietrich Buxtehude. He was, in fact, elected president of the International Dietrich Buxtehude Society. Some of these recordings have been of keyboard works, but Koopman, here and elsewhere, has also led small-ensemble works from the keyboard, covering an almost completely unknown repertoire. Here he offers a set of eight unpublished sonatas for from one to three stringed instruments – not only violin and viola da gamba, but also the older violone – and basso continuo.
