There is no doubt that the forces Herrweghe has employed here are some of the best in the 'Passion' business. Aside from this, however, one cannot eliminate the fact that there are several other notable recordings of this work that stand on their own merit, which for the most part are as 'good' or as 'bad' as this one. The three that I own which includes this one(all reviewed by me on Customer reviews) are: Gardiner's 1988 recording with the outstanding Monteverdi Choir that sparkles and shines as only they can; the 1994 Cleobury King's College Choir recording, whose soloists are superb etc. etc. etc. So it all really amounts to what YOU hear and what turns YOU on!

Bach-Gesellschaft, Leipzig 1851-1899
Johann Sebastian Bach's Complete Works
49 PDF - 2002 - >16.800 pages - 1.80Gb

The Bach-Gesellschaft began publishing Bach's works in 1851 with a volume that started with BWV 1, the cantata Wie schön leuchtet der Morgenstern, BWV 1. It completed publication in 1900 with its forty-sixth volume. The volumes varied somewhat in editorial quality and accuracy; Britannica both lauds the editing of Wilhelm Rust for the edition and notes a deterioration of standards after his death, including a volume in which "the bass and violin are a bar apart for a whole line" (apparently a reference to sloppy editing). Nevertheless, the Bach-Gesellschaft's volumes were a groundbreaking achievement and contributed greatly to the study and appreciation of Bach's music. They remained the standard edition of Bach's complete works until the publication of the Neue Bach-Ausgabe, begun in 1954 and published by Bärenreiter.

After the dearth of major festivals in the middle of the weeks following Trinity Sunday, the end of the Lutheran church year sees two important ones, the feast of St. Michael and All Angels and Reformation Day. Both fall on fixed dates, so that their position in relation to the numbered Sundays after Trinity varies from year to year. Reformation Day celebrates Martin Luther’s historic nailing of his 95 Theses to the door of the church of Wittenberg Castle, and it is observed on the anniversary of the event, 31 October (except in a few places which chose to do so on the Sunday following that date).

No fewer than 43 of Bach’s 200 (known) church cantatas use the flute as a solo instrument, making for a unique part of its repertoire. With its full and flexible tone, virtuosity dexterity and clarity of articulation, the flute was perfectly adapted to the expression of evocative ‘affects’ within texts and contexts. Because of the intimate relation between the sound of the flute and the human breath, the instrument seems ideal to evoke crying, sighing, grieving (BWV 55, 94, 114, 146). The flute solos from the Bach cantatas require great performers. Some 300 years after they were premiered, the Bach Collegium Stuttgart and Hänssler Classic are pleased to celebrate Peter-Lukas Graf, one of their most eminent soloists!

With it's forty-five chorale preludes, the Orgelbüchlein bears witness to a mastery of the art of improvisation on the organ, as the congregation heard it at the time before singing the hymn in it's turn. It was a tempting experiment to revive this primary function: by collaborating with the combined forces of the Ensemble Vocal Bergamasque and the Maîtrise de Notre-Dame de Paris, Benjamin Alard gives the 'little organ book' it's full significance and expressive power.
