"Baby James Harvest" is felt by many to be the weakest of their first four albums which were all released on the Harvest Label. This would be their last album for that label. This album is more of an acquired taste than their previous, more accessible releases…

Excellent addition to any prog rock music collection

Released in November 1972, their fourth album was mainly recorded at Strawberry Studios in Stockport with the epic ‘Moonwater’ being recorded with a full orchestra at Abbey Road studios. The record was their final album for EMI’s Harvest label and featured pieces such as ‘Summer Soldier’, ‘One Hundred Thousand Smiles Out’ and ‘Delph Town Morn’. Upon its completion the album release was marked by an appearance by Barclay James Harvest with BJH Symphony Orchestra conducted by Martyn Ford on the BBC Radio One programme In Concert. This highly memorable appearance being the only professional live recording of the band with an orchestra. Aside from premiering new tracks from ‘Baby James Harvest’, the recording also featured classics such as ‘Mockingbird’, ‘Galadriel’, ‘The Poet’, ‘After the Day’ and ‘Dark Now My Sky’.

Barclay James Harvest had streamlined their sound considerably after leaving the Harvest label, culminating (so many felt) in the mellifluous music of Gone to Earth. Their pretensions to progressive rock all but abandoned, BJH here invites comparison to contemporaries like Supertramp, REO Speedwagon, and Fleetwood Mac (some of whom were similarly tagged with the prog rock label early on)…

Punk's rise in Britain seemed to be leading to the demise of Barclay James Harvest, the fate awaiting so many of the island's veteran rock bands. Although 1976's Octoberon had finally pushed the band into the U.K. Top 20, it was all downhill from there, as the group's follow-ups in 1977 and 1978 landed ever lower in the listings, something that Barclay James Harvest's shift to a brighter, more American sound did nothing to prevent. Keyboardist Wooly Wolstenholme had enough, and announced his decision to depart in early 1979 during the rehearsals for their forthcoming album.

In the early 1970s Barclay James Harvest pioneered the fusion of rock and classical music, touring with their own symphony orchestra. On the 23rd September 2023, a stunning and unique concert took place which saw the first performance by any incarnation of Barclay James Harvest with a symphony orchestra to take place in UK since 1973. Joining JLBJH for this memorable concert was The Slaithwaite Philharmonic Orchestra, arranged and conducted by Benjamin Ellin.
