“Nobody plays this music more authoritatively and eloquently,” wrote London’s Sunday Times of Stephen Kovacevich in Beethoven. “He is in his element, responding wholeheartedly to the extreme physicality that Beethoven brought to music … but the wit and delicacy of the playing are also remarkable.”Kovacevich himself has spoken of his love for the “fun and virtuosity” of the composer’s early sonatas, while in the often challenging later works he sees a “subtext of radiance and some sort of inherent faith in life.”

My exploration of Beethoven’s music has been a long and deeply rewarding journey. Since 2002, I have dedicated myself to performing his works extensively, including two complete cycles of the piano sonatas, the piano trio cycle, the violin sonata cycle, and all of Beethoven’s works for cello and piano. In 2015, this journey took on a new dimension when I began recording the complete 32 Piano Sonatas at Teldex Studio in Berlin. After years of commitment and artistic reflection, the recording was completed in early 2023.Over the course of these two decades, much has changed—both globally and personally. Through it all, Beethoven’s music has been a steadfast companion, shaping my artistic identity and deepening my understanding of his profound compositions.

Following his recordings on Deutsche Grammophon of music by Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt, Chinese pianist Yundi Li takes on the three most popular piano sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven, the "Pathétique," "Moonlight," and "Appassionata." Known for having brilliant technique and dynamic showmanship, Yundi plays against type in these beloved works, which call for more introspection and expressiveness than might be expected from him. Even though the outer movements of "Pathétique" and "Appassionata" and the last movement of "Moonlight" give Yundi ample opportunity to demonstrate his agility, power, and high energy, they are relatively restrained, compared to the kind of virtuosic fare that made him an international star.
