Many metal fans were saddened to see the demise of the animated series Metalocalypse that aired for several years on Adult Swim. The show featured the exploits of the band Dethklok, who released four albums. In the aftermath, Brendon Small, creator and mastermind behind the project, recorded an album as Galaktikon back in 2012 with the same lineup as the Dethklok albums (Small on vocals/guitar, drummer Gene Hoglan and bassist Bryan Beller).

Joe Satriani may have retained the services of keyboardist Mike Keneally for Shockwave Supernova, the guitarist's 15th studio album – Keneally has been in Satch's orbit for a while now – but he chose to invite bassist Bryan Beller and drummer Marco Minnemann (from the inventive instrumental rock band the Aristocrats) to be his rhythm section for the bulk of the record. This slight shakeup reinvigorates Satriani, who already sounded spry on Unstoppable Momentum.

The Aristocrats is a heavy rock and jazz fusion power trio from around the world. The music here tends toward playful fun but incoherence. This is a series of lengthy albeit sophisticated jams full of incredible technical proficiency but lacking any memorability."Boing!. I'm in the Back" Distorted guitar and an odd rhythm adopt a quirky drive in this opener. Eventually, it boasts a bit of progressive surf rock. I appreciate the softer side the band takes on during the middle passage.

The album was co-produced by Jane Getter and Adam Holzman, while mixing duties were handled by Adam Holzman and Steven Wilson at Spin Studios in Long island City, NYC.

The show was recorded and filmed at the State Theatre in Minneapolis, MN before a sold-out audience as part of Vai’s successful Sound Theories world tour. Vai chose the State Theater to film because of its large, lush acoustics and the historical theatre’s gorgeous interior. The 2 hour and 40 minute set contains several new tracks and re-orchestrated pieces culled from his rich catalog. His guitar-wielding extravaganza in “The Murder” is an artistic performance piece that must be seen to be believed.
