If you ask classical music connoisseurs in this country about music by Turkish composers, the name Fazıl Say is likely to come to mind – but beyond that, there’s no idea! According to the British conductor Howard Griffiths, a lot has happened in the 100 years of the Turkish Republic’s existence: the Ankara Conservatory was founded in 1936 at the suggestion of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk; music students were sent to Europe and the USA for training. Starting with the ‘Turkish Five’, the pioneering generation of classical Turkish composers, an independent classical music tradition was able to develop, and a rich and lively musical landscape has emerged in Turkey.

Its Ella Fitzgerald so it is going to be a delight to listen to, The original album called Mack The Knife : Ella In Berlin is a live album recorded, well you guess where! It includes the wonderful improvised version of Mack The Knife where Ella forgets the words and improvises a whole new song and this song contains what is great about this album also what is great about Ella Fitzgerald and that is the sheer unalloyed joy in singing it comes across in the giggling thank yous between songs and her rapport with band and audience, also included is a wonderful version of How High The Moon and Too Darn Hot. This expanded version also incudes another concert from Berlin with another version of Mack The Knife as well as tracks from a concert in Cannes and the Hollywood Bowl. So what's not to like it's Ella at her height doing what she enjoyed doing, it is a joy.

To quote the linear notes:"They don't make records like this anymore, but thank heavens they did once upon a time". You may have heard these chestnuts done by dozens of singers/bands over the years, but that should not stop you from checking out these versions beautifully done by two classic and class acts, SARAH VAUGHAN and BILLY ECKSTEIN. Billy may not be too well known these days, but should be, and his unique baritone sounds almost operatic, and Sarah keeps things flowing too, on these (mostly) duets. Every track is golden, but the best may be EASTER PARADE, and THE GIRL THAT I MARRY. –Amazon

For anyone compiling a directory of the ‘greatest recordings’ of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra some nominations are easy to classify. Sir Thomas Beecham’s 1937/8 Berlin recording of Mozart’s The Magic Flute is certainly one of them. Originally re-mastered in 1991 it is pleasing to have this Nimbus set available in the catalogue…

Beyond good. This is my favorite Tony Bennett recording. Great stuff throughout, many surprises in the arrangements, many surprises in the vocals, just so many yummy things that I know you will love this.
