Beverly Sills - The Great Recordings (2004)  Music

Beverly Sills - The Great Recordings (2004)
FLAC (tracks) - 572 MB | MP3 CBR 320 kbps - 279 MB
2:01:04 | Classical, Opera | Label: Deutsche Grammophon

The album includes some rarities, among them "Mira, o Norma" from Norma and "Santo di patria" from Attila. It also features excerpts from Sills' complete recording of Massenet's Manon plus excerpts from La Traviata and Il barbiere di Siviglia.
Readers familiar with Yogi Berra might comment that it's déjà vu all over again, as it has been not even two years since Deutsche Grammophon devoted a two-CD compilation to Beverly Sills. That one was called The Art of Beverly Sills (DG 471766-2), and it included 134 minutes of excerpts from "Bubbles's" operatic recordings and recitals. The Great Recordings does not copy a single note of what was on the earlier compilation, which is good, but I must grumble that the result is that Sills' Mozart and Richard Strauss record – one of my favorites – now has been divided between two separate releases and three separate discs, and that excerpts from her complete recordings of Manon and Hoffmann are similarly scattered. So much for continuity! Perhaps DG will repackage the two 2-CD sets and reunite the divided material. Better yet, perhaps they will embark on a comprehensive "Sills Edition" of everything they can get their hands on, and release it at a very reasonable price!

Rhythm & Blues, Soul, Smooth Jazz | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 62 min | 144 MB
Label: Hip-O Records | Rel: 2006

Twelve tracks just aren't enough for a definitive overview of Will Downing's long career, but his entry in the 20th Century Masters: Millennium Collection series makes for an affordable, right-sized introduction to the singer if you're wondering whether or not to explore this Luther Vandross-styled balladeer further. The song selection is well done and includes many great tracks.

In the sixties, in England (? and elsewhere ?) artists used to go into the studio, record 2 songs, release them as a 45. But the material on the 45 was rarely used on the LP release. If not, they recorded another 45. And if you didn't buy the 45, you usually never had a chance to collect that piece of music.

Power Metal / Heavy Metal

As helpfully pointed out in the title, Chapter V: Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken sees Swedish metal institution Hammerfall hoisting aloft the torch of power metal (unbent, unbowed, etc.) for the fifth full-studio album of their career. But "power" metal may no longer the best tag with which to describe the band, whose material here ("Blood Bound," "Fury of the Wild," "Born to Rule," etc.) is really better described as classic, vintage, or better yet, timeless heavy metal, if you will…

Here is a second brace of solo Pass tracks from the sessions that have already yielded Songs for Ellen. The ambience is ruminative and extremely intimate; the menu consists entirely of much-explored standards at mostly unrelieved slow tempos. Several notes are not cleanly struck, but the musical imagination that previously yielded several solo recordings is still very much in gear, albeit a very subtle gear. A general bit of advice: it is better to listen to this album in small doses (a few tracks at a time), try to mentally filter out the very closely recorded mechanical noises the fingers make on the guitar, and not expect anything startling to leap out at you. Better yet, try some of Pass' earlier solo albums (such as the Virtuoso series, also on Pablo) before embarking upon this.

Yes, Olga Kern does appear in her photographs to be quite beautiful, glamorously, gorgeously, gloriously beautiful. Try not to hold that against her because, under all her appearance of beauty, Kern is actually a great musician and the proof is in her disc of transcriptions and variations by Rachmaninov. Kern's physical beauty is matched and surpassed by her tone, her technique, and, best of all, her interpretations. Her tone is clear, deep, rich, strong, and warm. Her technique is effortless, flawless, and just about beyond belief. And her interpretations are even better.
