Heading into the 90’s, the waters were a bit rocky for the hard rock/metal world. The landscape was changing and bands such as Warrant, Poison, and Skid Row who all at one time were selling out arenas and amphitheaters found themselves playing to 1/2 full venues and in some cases reduced to playing half full clubs. It was also a bad time for new bands of the genre who were coming out. While this was true, it definitely didn’t mean that these bands weren’t any good. As a matter of fact, bands like Tora Tora, War Babies, and Babylon AD were doing this stuff as good if not better than many of their peers. Of those acts, one band and their debut album rose above them all to really blow my mind. That band was Slik Toxik and the album was Doin the Nasty.

A change of outfit can do wonders for one’s outlook on life. Just ask Robert Ellis. Never one to be bashful about the pleasures of a good suit — witness his specially made space cowboy threads from recent years — he wears that flair firmly on the sleeve of his new LP, Texas Piano Man. Donning a sharp white tuxedo that gleams like a blank slate against the blue skies and rolling hills of Marfa, Texas, it’s a turn that Ellis comes by honestly.

My Script is ineffably Salmonesque, recalling many of the artist’s key incarnations from seminal work with the Surrealists to date, and boasting typically whip-smart dialectical wordiness punctuated by a recurring six-track modulated drone cycle (“It’s Not Forgetting” et al). There are strangled guitars and glam posturing (“Gorgeous & Messed Up”), post-punk angst (“Sign Apps”), dyspeptic pop-rock (“Making Me Better”), and anarchic deployment of rhyming triplets (“Fucking Shit Up”). “Client JGT683" is a meditation on prevailing immigration policies co-written with pundit Waleed Aly, and “Animal Man” a raw reflection on the primitivism of the artist.

Merge continues its 20th anniversary festivities with a comp of non-label artists– Bright Eyes, Shins, New Pornos– covering songs from its catalog.
Merge Records doesn't look its age. Originally formed as an outlet for Superchunk material, the Durham, N.C.-based label has grown into an indie institution, but only gradually– year by year, release by release. It never allied itself with a scene or a sound, so the mind doesn't automatically tether it to a specific place or time, the way Sub Pop, despite its strong roster this decade, will be most closely associated with Seattle in the late 1980s and early 90s. So it's hard to believe Merge is already 20 years old, an occasion the label is marking with a big birthday bash– the five-day XX Merge fest in July– and a subscription-only series of commemorative retrospectives and remixes. Perhaps the most intriguing party favor is Score! Twenty Years of Merge Records: The Covers, a choppy but oddly endearing compilation that enlists 20 non-Merge acts to cover Merge songs.

Though they had recently lost lyricist and principal songwriter Jason Newsted to Metallica, Arizona thrashers Flotsam & Jetsam neatly avoided the sophomore slump with 1988's No Place for Disgrace. The album basically repeats the formula of their debut but benefits from a cleaner yet still-in-your face production job…
