Alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett hasn't been as heavily publicized as his fellow young lions, but he can play with as much authority, conviction, and sheer energy as anyone. Only some uneven material keeps his '92 album from being exceptional, and even on the weak songs, Garrett's playing forces you to pay attention.

Barb Jungr is the alchemist among jazz singers. She takes dubious songs, and turns them into gold. And she takes songs we already knew were gold, and makes them interestingly different. That gift was on electrifying display on Wednesday night, at the launch of her new album Shelter from the Storm. Jungr’s previous nine albums, which include reinventions of Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, have lofted her slowly but surely to the top rank of jazz singers. Her latest roams across the great American songbook, with songs by Bacharach and Bernstein and Rodger alongside Joni Mitchell and Bowie and Bob Dylan. With her was Grammy award-winning piano virtuoso and ingenious arranger Laurence Hobgood, bassist Davide Mantovani and percussionist Olli Savill.

Back Porch Syndicate Records recording artist Jefferson Grizzard reaches a higher plateau with a new batch of songs, with his January 15, 2016, CD release Daydream of Hope. Grizzard has been on the outskirts of the music scene and now coming into his own by tackling themes of love, loss, social and environmental issues. This is the follow-up to his critically acclaimed CD, Learning To Lie on which Willie Nile co-wrote “When Levon Sings,” paying tribute to legendary drummer Levon Helm of The Band.

The concept of a compilation of Bob Dylan's gospel songs is certainly an idea whose time has come. That this does not feature Dylan performing the original versions of these songs is yet another. Executive producer Jeffrey Gaskill assembled a wide-ranging assortment of the hottest talent in the gospel arena, both past and present, to perform the songs from Dylan's Slow Train Coming and Saved albums, and producer Joel Moss extracted phenomenal performances from Shirley Caesar, the Fairfield Four, the Sounds of Blackness, Rance Allen, the Chicago Mass Choir fronted by Regina McCrary (who sang backup for Dylan on the 1978 and 1979 tours when these recordings were originally done), the Mighty Clouds of Joy, Helen Baylor (with Billy Preston), Aaron Neville, Dottie Peoples, Lee Williams & the Spiritual QC's, Mavis Staples, and Dylan himself (performing a duet on a completely rewritten version of "Gonna Change My Way of Thinkin'").

Long before the automobile was widely used as a means of transport, the railroad was the symbol of freedom, independence and adventure in America. "Go west, young man" was the typical saying for anyone who wanted to try their luck as a prospector, farmer or rancher. In 1869 it was possible for the first time to cross the American continent from east to west by rail. In addition, a suitable music began to develop, which consisted of folk, blues, rockabilly and skiffle songs. These songs glorified and celebrated on the subject of the lyrics only one thing, namely the railway. It was time to dedicate a double CD to these songs.

In 1964, the Kingston Trio left Capitol Records, apparently miffed that newer rock groups like the Beatles and the Beach Boys were taking a higher priority in the A&R department. They signed with Decca Records and released their first album with the new label, Nick-Bob-John, by the end of the year. Unlike the Trio's later Decca material, there's not much of a pop influence on Nick-Bob-John; aside from a handful of folky John Stewart originals and a pair of new outside tracks, including "More Poems" by a pre-"Classical Gas" Mason Williams," the lineup consists of stripped-down versions of folk classics like the standard "Midnight Special" and "Long Time Blues." The collegiate folk boom was winding down by late 1964, but Nick-Bob-John shows that the Kingston Trio were still at the top of their game.
