Peter Orth: While it may seem that everything has been recorded in the classical canon, I’ve found there still is room for new interpretations. Oddly, the piano music of Johannes Brahms has by no means been exhausted.In my experience with American music teaching, the great masters were very much handled with a certain distant reverence - when in actuality they need to be approached naturally. Coming to live in Germany where the composers lived and worked removes these pedestals in favor of understanding their lives in the context of their surroundings.Having been in the same room to hear the likes of Callas, Baker, Bernstein, Celibidache, Horowitz, Rubinstein, Serkin, to mention only a few, showed me viscerally what kind of fire is involved in making a musical statement. Perhaps having been witness to a time now gone, arguably the last of the great performing generation, has informed in my ethos a kind of measuring stick against which to measure myself and be responsible to. Whether I can live up to any of it is not for me to say.

It is important to Yunus Kaya to let his interpretation seem spontaneous, almost improvisational, with all the care of rehearsal. Ilona Eibenschütz, a student of Clara Schumann who met Brahms personally and visited him during his summer stay in Bad Ischl, was allowed to hear his Op. 118 and Op. 119 by the composer himself. In her memoirs, she describes his piano playing as "very free-spirited - as if he were improvising - with heart and soul…" During the recording, Kaya wanted to make these two aspects palpable: the loneliness and introversion on the one hand, and the openness to the spontaneous in sound and tempo shaping on the other. No feeling, no pain can be felt and described in the same way every day. From this basic attitude, Yunus Kaya has sought the balance between fidelity to the musical text and artistic freedom of the performer.

MP3 320 kbps | 12 CDs, 12:17:16 min | 1,65 Gb | Scans -> 12,5 mb
Genre: Classical / Label: Naxos

This set is a remarkable bargain, containing all of Brahms's solo piano music, including such chips from his workshop as cadenzas for other composers' concertos and a series of strictly mechanical piano studies that nobody will want to listen through. No matter. Idil Biret has a firm grasp of Brahms's idiom, and she plays with insight and passion throughout the set. Although she doesn't startle with her virtuosity, she handles the considerable technical demands of the music with great confidence.
