So wie die berühmte Alice durch ein Kaninchenloch ins Wunderland rutscht, beginnt auch für den kleinen Edgar eine abenteuerliche Reise mit einem Loch: Während einer langweiligen Schulstunde über die Könige Englands verschwindet er durch ein winziges Loch in seinem Pult und findet sich an Bord eines Segelschiffs auf großer Fahrt wieder. Noch bevor er weiß, wie ihm geschieht, wird er schon wieder an Land gebracht. Eden heißt die Insel, und bereits mit den Zollbeamten, die ihn nicht passieren lassen wollen, lernt er die Verschrobenheit ihrer Bewohner kennen. Angesichts der nicht gerade paradiesischen Zustände wünscht er sich bald nach Hause, zu seiner Mutter und einer guten Tasse Tee.

Edwin Spindrift, linguista e dottore in filosofia, abbandona precipitosamente l'Asia per recarsi a Londra: gli è stato diagnosticato un tumore al cervello e solo la capitale della Gran Bretagna, le sue cliniche e i suoi medici, gli lasciano speranze. Ma all'ospedale Spindrift è una vittima, il personale lo affligge, il cibo lo ossessiona (ragù di cervello…), i vicini di letto recitano risultati calcistici. E poi Sheila, la sua compagna, si fa vedere sempre più di rado. A un certo punto, la decisione: fuggire dall'ospedale, a piedi nudi e con il cranio rasato (ma non aperto), la notte prima dell'intervento, per immergersi nelle oscurità londinesi. Alex, the protagonist, has a passion for classical music and is a member of a vicious teenage gang that commits random acts of brutality. Captured and imprisoned, he is transformed through behavioral conditioning into a model citizen, but his taming also leaves him defenseless. He ultimately reverts to his former behavior. The final chapter of the original British edition, in which Alex renounces his amoral past, was removed when the novel was first published in the United States.

Protagonista dei tre romanzi che compongono la trilogia burgessiana è Victor Crabbe, funzionario del ministero dell'istruzione inglese, che in Malaysia insegna storia nei college in cui si va formando quella che sarà la classe dirigente del nuovo stato indipendente. Con lui c'è la moglie, che rifiuta, quasi fosse in esilio, la vita nell'ex colonia britannica. A poco a poco però si lascia affascinare dal Paese e il fatto la avvicina al marito, anche se a separarli è qualcosa di interiore che attiene alla loro storia di europei alla ricerca di se stessi.
