Tom Petersson gets to show his stuff on a Fender acoustic bass on the intro of California Man followed by Neilson's soloing. Soon he is jamming full form, and Carlos has joined in on the drums. Finally Zander comes out screaming going to a party. The band slows down for The Flame, and Zander proves he can still sing a ballad. Elvis would have been proud of the band's cover of Don't Be Cruel. Zander and Petersson both riff on acoustics while Nielsen adds a bit of zip to the song. Two old favorites are brought out to close the show I Want You to Want Me and Surrender.

While their records were entertaining and full of skillful pop, it wasn't until At Budokan that Cheap Trick's vision truly gelled. Many of these songs, like "I Want You to Want Me" and "Big Eyes," were pleasant in their original form, but seemed more like sketches compared to the roaring versions on this album…

Budokan II is exactly what it says it is – the sequel to Cheap Trick's career-making At Budokan. Picking up where its predecessor left off (the tracks even begin at number 11), the record contains all of the band's classics – "ELO Kiddies," "Southern Girls," "California Man," "Downed," "How Are You?," "On Top of the World," "Oh Caroline," "Auf Wiedersehen," "Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Piece" – that didn't make the first record…

Cheap Trick's comeback album is by no means a return to the creativity and vitality of their glory days. But even though Lap of Luxury is largely formulaic, the band's strongest collection of material in some time fills that late-'80s pop-metal formula quite well…

Combining a love for British guitar pop songcraft with crunching power chords and a flair for the absurd, Cheap Trick provided the necessary links between '60s pop, heavy metal, and punk. Led by guitarist Rick Nielsen, the band's early albums were filled with highly melodic, well-written songs that drew equally from the crafted pop of the Beatles, the sonic assault of the Who, and the tongue-in-cheek musical eclecticism and humor of the Move.
