Despite his lack of formal training, he was capable of burrowing deep inside the most sophisticated popular songs and tapping a vein of pure emotion. When surrounded by great musicians in an unusual ensemble, as he is on this album, Baker's poetic instincts were at their keenest. The distinctive septet of jazz giants contains a front line of trumpet, flute, and baritone sax playing Herbie Mann's delicate arrangements over a rhythm section that is empathy personified. Baker never recorded with a more talented or sensitive group, as the music evokes a mood captured so seductively in the cover photo.

Feeling stressed by events of the day? Then by all means, grab this CD and pop it into your stereo. This is a total stress reducer. There's no singing on this album, it's all ballads. Chet is surrounded by a host of jazz greats, including Pepper Adams, Kenny Burrell, Bill Evans and Philly Joe Jones, and the sound is rich, delicate, and soothing. Recorded in the late 1950s, this 20 bit remastered version sounds great. You can almost hear the breathing. Highly recommended.

Chet Baker recorded a lot of excellent music over the course of his lengthy career, but his late 1950s dates for Riverside rank among his finest. Baker was one of the few artists to truly transcend the "cool" style, creating with his restrained and delicate approach to the trumpet (and to his singing) some of the most lyrical, delicate, and emotionally powerful work in jazz. This 11-track compilation shouldn't take the place of Baker's studio albums of the time, but it's a wonderfully assembled introduction to the artist. "Look for the Silver Lining," "September Song," and "Almost Like Being in Love" are highlights, but every tune here is a gem. Included is a bonus compilation disc of other Riverside artists from the period, including Wes Montgomery, Charlie Byrd, and Thelonious Monk.
