So Emmanuelle is a photographer hanging out in Rio. She takes pictures, she gets laid, you know the drill. In between terrible sex scenes, we get a lot of shots of Rio de Janeiro. "City of God" strived for the stark realism of life in the Rio slums but I think this film really captured the bleak despair of living in Rio while making an impotent sex film. At any rate, the Rio scenes were more interesting than the sex. Where is Krista Allen when I need her? This movie almost blasted me into a coma. Beam up to Krista's love ship and leave Rio in the dust.

The film opens in Gethsemane in medias res as Jesus prays and is tempted by Satan, while his apostles, Peter, James, and John sleep. After receiving thirty pieces of silver, one of Jesus' other apostles, Judas Iscariot, approaches with the temple guard and betrays Jesus with a kiss. As the guards move in to arrest Jesus, Peter cuts off the ear of Malchus, but Jesus heals the ear. The temple guard arrest Jesus and the apostles flee. John tells Mary and Mary Magdalene of the arrest, and Peter follows Jesus at a distance. Caiaphas holds a trial of Jesus over the objection of some of the other priests, who are expelled from the court. When questioned by Caiaphas whether he is the son of God, Jesus replies "I AM," which Caiaphas believes justifies the charge of blasphemy, and Jesus is condemned to death. Three times Peter denies knowing Jesus, and the remorseful Judas returns the money. Tormented by demons, Judas flees the city and hangs himself with a rope from a dead donkey.

Le film relate les douze dernières heures de la vie de Jésus-Christ, considérées comme les plus intenses de sa vie dans lesquelles Jésus-Christ institue l'Eucharistie. Le film relate ainsi la prière de Jésus au mont des Oliviers, où Jésus résiste à la tentation de Satan. On voit ensuite Jésus capturé par les autorités juives, et flagellé du fait de sa dénonciation par Judas auprès des Grands Prêtres. Suite à cela on voit son jugement devant le préfet romain Pilate, ainsi que son passage devant Hérode, et sa condamnation à mort. Le film étant coupé de flash back sur les moments principaux de la vie publique du Christ, comme le sermon des Béatitudes. Le film s'achève par la montée au Calvaire de Jésus et par sa crucifixion avec Marie et Marie Madeleine. Puis finit par la résurrection du Christ.

The incredible atmosphere is captured wonderfully in this beautiful release and the extras, consisting of two interesting interviews, adds a healthy dollop of context to the film. An essential purchase.
