By concentrating on his biggest straight country hits for Capitol and Dot Records ("Tips of My Fingers," "Yesterday, When I Was Young," "Thank God and Greyhound," "Come Live with Me") and sidestepping many of the novelty numbers that were associated with Hee-Haw, the 14-song Greatest Hits makes a case for Roy Clark's talents as songwriter and performer, providing a good introduction to his career.

3CD SET PROVIDING AN EXCELLENT SHOWCASE OF THE BYRDS LIVE WORK DURING THE LATE 60s/EARLY 70s Featuring three full length FM Radio Broadcasts of performances by different incarnations of The Byrds, in 1968, 1973 and 1978 (albeit by then billed as McGuinn, Clark and Hillman) this boxed set provides an excellent showcase of this ever-changing groups live work during the decade that immediately followed their pop career in the earlier part of the 1960s. The first show featured, from the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco in November 1968, was performed at a time of great change and uncertainty.

The Dave Clark Five are usually compared with their British contemporaries, the Beatles. Though clearly not in the same league, they don't deserve to be completely dismissed.

Bear Family's The Fool – a 33-track anthology of Sanford Clark's Jamie and Dot recordings that includes his only major hit, "The Fool" – is as generous and definitive a collection as anyone could want. Not content to stop there, Bear Family followed up with Shades, a miscellany of Clark's odds and ends spanning more than 20 years. The album begins with three Jamie recordings that didn't fit on The Fool, including Lee Hazlewood's tragic story-song "The Girl on Death Row," about an innocent girl who is mistakenly put to death.

Although they never wowed the critics like the Beatles did, for a time in the mid-'60s the Dave Clark Five were the Fab Four's main commercial competition, turning out hit after hit and selling an astounding 100 million records before all was said and done. This generous, 28-track, single-disc anthology has all the essentials (the DC5 were never really an album band but they sure knew how to make singles), including "Glad All Over," "Catch Us If You Can," "Over and Over," "Can't You See That She's Mine," "Bits and Pieces," and the gorgeous ballad "Because," among others, making this a more than adequate introduction and career survey of a wonderfully fun and often underrated band.

The first officially recorded date from an ensemble led by the brilliant jazz pianist Sonny Clark is an interesting prelude to his subsequent classic efforts for the Blue Note label. After leaving his home near Pittsburgh, moving to Los Angeles and finishing work as a sideman with Wardell Gray, Oscar Pettiford, and Buddy DeFranco, Clark lived in the Northern California Bay area of San Francisco, and led this obscure trio of bassist Jerry Good and drummer Al Randall. Recorded in performance at the Mocambo Club in Oakland in mid-January 1955, it is an historical document for fans of Clark who might want to hear the pianist at a time when he was happy – not doing the drugs that destroyed his life and career – and in a freewheeling mood playing standards.

In 1956, singer Sanford Clark, guitarist Al Casey and producer Lee Hazlewood laid out the all-time rockabilly classic The Fool and put Phoenix, Arizona, on the music world's radar. The Foolcame out on the tiny MCI imprint and, energized by the national hit, the label for the next five years turned out more Rock 'n' Roll gems by the likes of Al Casey, Dick Robinson and His Makebelievers, Jim Fleming and The Casuals, Bobby and The Demons, Frank Fafara and Denny Reed. This collection is the first-ever overview of this ground-breaking company, featuring Sanford Clark's never-before-heard pre-Fool recordings of Blue Suede Shoes and Heartbreak Hotel plus previously unreleased tracks by Lee Hazlewood, Spence Bare and the Newton Brothers featuring Wayne Newton, several vintage 1950s advertising jingles and two songs played on AMC's 'Mad Men.'

The two albums compiled on this single disc, Delbert & Glen from 1972 and Subject to Change from 1973, were both issued on Warner Bros. under the stewardship of Mo Ostin and Lenny Waronker, at that time easily the most adventurous and nurturing of all the major labels. Delbert McClinton and Glen Clark understood something about the amalgam of country and rock – as well as soul and blues – that eluded the Eagles entirely: that the roots of those musics were gritty, unpolished, immediate, and raucous. Therefore, in listening to these two long-lost gems, one feels as if the Faces were playing with Waylon Jennings and Booker T. & the MG's simultaneously. Fans of McClinton will no doubt hear the sheer raucous roots of his solo career in these sides – the first of which was produced in Hollywood by T-Bone Burnett, the second in Birmingham, AL, by Geoffrey Haslam.

The group's sixth American album shows them in somewhat uneven form, delivering the searing "I Need Love," with its roaring punk defiance – worthy of Eric Burdon – in addition to the roaring title track, as good a British take on New Orleans-style R&B as there was on the charts in those days.
