Gene Clarks 1974 masterpiece gets the reappraisal its long overdue. One of the greatest albums ever made. Initially celebrated for its obscurity, No Other is now celebrated for its magnificence. It was in every way a magnum opus: epic, sprawling, poetic, choral, rococo. 45 years on and recently remastered at Abbey Road, 4AD are giving No Other the reappraisal it deserves. As stated on 4AD's website, the original tapes were remastered at Abbey Road Studios, featuring a 5.1 surround mix of the album created for the first time. All the studio tapes were forensically worked on and mixed by the duo of Gene Clark aficionado Sid Griffin and producer John Wood; the extra tracks have not been edited or composited in any way, "allowing for everything to be heard exactly as it went down in the studio and before any overdubbing took place".

Gene Clark’s 1974 masterpiece gets the reappraisal it’s long overdue. On the eve of what would have been American singer-songwriter and Byrds founding member Gene Clark’s 75th birthday comes the reissue of one of his finest works, No Other. Released in 1974 on Asylum Records, a year after the Byrds short- lived reunion, Gene reached for the stars with No Other; a psychedelic rock, folk, country and soul record that famously cost a small fortune to make…

Winter in July can be a strange combination. Released in May of 2001, but seeing hype and sales in June and July, Chris Clark's Clarence Park is a frostingly cold glimpse at what winter feels like – even if one listens to it during the dog days of relentless sun. Big reverberated beats transform into a crisp sound experiment, synth washes cut and skate alongside and in between breakbeat scientology, and sound sculpture paints imagery of glacier-like masses floating along in the sea minding their own business. Albeit not sounding especially original, and having an immense amount of pressure to do so, Clark turns in a fine debut of sensitive and cerebrally brash material that sits comfortably alongside some of the better records of 2001.

SUPERB MID 80s PERFORMANCE BY GENE CLARK BACKED BY COUNTRY-ROCK ROYALTY In the early 1980s, Gene Clark spent some time living in Hawaii attempting to get clean . Upon his return to the US he formed The Firebyrds, with whom he recorded one album, which came out in 1984. The release coincided with the emergence of jangle-rock , by the likes of R.E.M. and Tom Petty, who had sparked a renewed interest in the Byrds music. Clark now began developing new fans among LA's roots-conscious Paisley Underground scene. It was in the midst of such acclaim that Gene Clark, alongside The Band s Rick Danko and Richard Manuel, fellow ex-Byrds Michael Clark and John York, ex- Beach Boy Blondie Chaplin and the Flying Burrito Brothers Rick Roberts, came together as Gene Clark & Friends to perform what was to be a superb show at The Three T s - a small club in Evansville, Indiana - on 15th May 1985.

The two albums compiled on this single disc, Delbert & Glen from 1972 and Subject to Change from 1973, were both issued on Warner Bros. under the stewardship of Mo Ostin and Lenny Waronker, at that time easily the most adventurous and nurturing of all the major labels. Delbert McClinton and Glen Clark understood something about the amalgam of country and rock – as well as soul and blues – that eluded the Eagles entirely: that the roots of those musics were gritty, unpolished, immediate, and raucous. Therefore, in listening to these two long-lost gems, one feels as if the Faces were playing with Waylon Jennings and Booker T. & the MG's simultaneously. Fans of McClinton will no doubt hear the sheer raucous roots of his solo career in these sides – the first of which was produced in Hollywood by T-Bone Burnett, the second in Birmingham, AL, by Geoffrey Haslam.

Though wildly misunderstood when first released (like most art that’s ahead of its time), Gene Clark's third solo album—his most focused and intricately-produced shot at musical immortality—is now revered as something of a lost masterpiece. Expectations were high for the former Byrd, who had signed a solo deal after he’d been the bright spot in the band’s abortive 1973 reunion.

Gene Clark was one of the most gifted singers and songwriters of his generation, but bad luck and self-destructive habits followed him like a shadow, and it seemed sadly appropriate that he died in the spring of 1991 as he was working on a follow-up to the biggest success of his solo career, So Rebellious a Lover, his 1987 collaboration with Carla Olson of the Textones. Clark's poor health (aggravated by drinking) and fear of flying prevented a full-scale tour in support of So Rebellious a Lover, but he played scattered live dates after its release, and In Concert gathers recordings from shows Clark gave in late 1988 and early 1990.
