On his debut ATMA recording, Québécois pianist Jean-Philippe Sylvestre revives André Mathieu’s Concerto de Québec alongside Rachmaninov’s colossal Piano Concerto No. 2. This album features the Orchestre Métropolitain under Alain Trudel, and was recorded live during the 2017 Festival Classica.

The first Brahms, the last Brahms, the first Berg: Brahms was twenty when he composed his Third Sonata in 1853, Berg twenty-three at the time of his only Sonata in that year 1910 … If the Sonata in F minor of Brahms represents the fulfillment and summit of the great romantic sonata - the timing of his symphonic gigantism - in the lineage from Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven to Schumann, Berg's Sonata symbolizes both the end of an epoch Closing the romantic sonata and opening up to the future. It is quite another world than that of Intermezzi Op. 117 of 1892, in which the art of chiaroscuro and half-tone is expressed. Brahms reconnects with the piano and his last cycles form a kind of pianistic testament. It is perhaps the most intimate of Brahms, who will also call some of his later plays "the lullabies of my pain" … Berg will obviously remember it in his Sonata.

The Brussels Philharmonic and music director Stéphane Denève will appear on Deutsche Grammophon. Brussels Philharmonic is the first symphony orchestra in Belgium to work with this record label. For its second recording with the more than 100-year-old Deutsche Grammophon, the orchestra opted for the ballet music of Sergei Prokofiev. Denève’s touch is clearly noticeable: he created a new musical dramaturgy, choosing from the existing suites, giving rise to new and exciting combinations.

Following a first recording on Alpha devoted to Brahms which garnered much praise real duo playing said Gramophone, while Classica discerned shared music making . . . a world full of nuances and subtlety, boundless sonic imagination (Marie-Elisabeth Hecker), playing of rare intelligence (Martin Helmchen) and awarded the disc a Choc the duo is reunited.
