As most readers familiar with Miles Davis' music will know, `Sketches of Spain' recorded in 1959-60 was his third and final collaborative project with orchestral arranger Gil Evans. The original album release, distilled from the recording sessions, explored the musical styles of the Iberian Peninsula and has a distinctive feel quite different from Miles' other work: listeners familiar with classical music who never previously connected with jazz often found SoS to be an accessible gateway to other innovative jazz compositions of the era.
There is only one word that can describe Narciso Yepes' technique: extraordinary. He was one of the finest virtuoso classical guitarists of the 20th century and his DG albums are regarded as reference recordings. This 5 CD Original Jackets collection brings together all of his concerto recordings for the Yellow Label, recorded between 1969 and 1979. The repertoire ranges from Vivaldi’s Lute Concertos adapted for guitar, to works written for Yepes and other leading guitarists of the 20th century.
The flute playing of Patrick Gallois epitomizes several of the prime virtues of the French flute tradition; fine-spun liquidity of tone, delectable phrasing and exemplary breath control, and, when required, the ability to project and capture the attention of the listener, even across full blown orchestral tuttis. But these qualities aside, Gallois is an artist of evident distinction and innate musicality, and I have no hesitation in commending this new recording of works by Rodrigo and Khachaturian to any collector, who, like myself, may have only a limited appetite for the flute!
With the stresses and strains of modern life to contend with, many turn to classical music for solace and this varied collection of over seven and a half hours of relaxing favorites is the perfect antidote to the pressures of modern life. The set is themed and starts with two CDs of choral music, many of which are vocal arrangements of familiar favorites. These are followed by CDs devoted respectfully to flute and harp, the classical guitar, piano and orchestral music. Those who enjoyed the 101 Adagios set will find much to enjoy here, and can be reassured that any duplication is kept to an absolute minimum and where it does occur, is in strikingly different arrangements. The artists at the helm of this relaxing journey include the choirs of King s College Cambridge and the New College Oxford, flautist William Bennett and harpist Marisa Robles, Pepe Romero, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Herbert von Karajan and Sir Georg Solti.
Emilio Aragón conducts the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra (performing the classical part) together with three Cuban percussionists and Alain Pérez on the double bass. The challenge is to integrate Afro-Cuban rhythms into a classical context such as the Brandenburg concerts, for which Alain Pérez replaces the Bach basso continuo, typical of the Baroque, with the Cuban tumbao bassoon, giving adequate space for percussion, such as the guaguancó, conga, danzón, contradanza, son, bolero… and which could feel comfortable around violins.

Supported by an evocative cover photo from of the Lion's Court in the Alhambra in Granada, this is a great anthology of guitar solo works and guitar concertos stretching from the 16th to 20th centuries.
