Chopin said there is nothing more beautiful than the sound of a guitar, save perhaps two, and this wonderful collection includes perennial favorites for one, two and even four guitars. Two CDs include favorites for solo guitar and guitar duet; another two feature concertos with orchestra, including Rodrigos Concierto de Aranjuez; the fifth disc is devoted to the music of Bach; and finally a disc of popular music arranged for the guitar. With a running time of over 7 hours of music this box set provides excellent value for money. Features some of the greatest guitarists in the Decca catalogue, including Pepe Romero, Eduardo Fernández, Alexandre Lagoya, and "The Royal Family of the Guitar", Los Romeros Celedonio, and his sons, Angel, Celín & Pepe.

Spanish music has been enriched in recent years by a series of striking and exciting double concertos featuring the country’s emblematic instrument, the guitar. Leading composer Antón García Abril has written prolifically for the guitar and Concierto de Gibralfaro offers three evocative vignettes for two guitars. Mistral by David del Puerto is written for the highly unusual combination of guitar and accordion, a single-movement concerto of great colour and dynamic palette. Guereña’s Concierto ecuánime, for guitar and vibraphone, embraces the rhythmic influence of jazz while employing the tuning used in the rondeña form of flamenco.

This album of guitar concertos from the Americas features pieces composed for David Tanenbaum. Building on a tradition of prominent guitarists generating repertoire through new commissions, these works present the guitar in a variety of settings. Kernis’s concerto dips with ease into the world of pop music, whereas his Lullaby and Soliloquy are reflective, lyrical and romantic. Sierra’s concerto asserts a rhythmic and percussive character, while Piazzolla’s dark and sentimental double concerto is one of his least-known works.
