Cosmic Sounds

Cosmic Suite is an album by American jazz pianist Matthew Shipp recorded in 2008 and released on the Polish Not Two label. He leads a quartet with Daniel Carter on reeds, Joe Morris on bass and Whit Dickey on drums. This particular lineup has not recorded before, although all of the members have played together in other combinations.
Starting with "Cosmic Suite - Part One," Daniel is playing some lovely, laid-back, muted trumpet while the rest of the quartet swirls calmly around him. This has to be some of the most calm and enchanting music we've heard from Matt and his cohorts in recent memory. Acid Mothers Temple is a completely freak out japanese neo-hippie tribe led by the guitarist Malato Kawabata (partially known for previous works published at the end of the 1970s). The band were formed in 1996 under the name Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O (Underground Freak Out). They started their career playing perpetual psychedelic jams very closed to Amon Duul II and Gong at their most gorgeous spacey rock moments…

Whatever changes have occurred in the galaxy of Acid Mothers Temple, the group has remained perpetually active. So in 2005, when various departures and line-up changes finally prompted group leader Kawabata Makoto to put the project Acid Mothers Temple and the Melting Paraiso U.F.O. on indefinite hiatus, the last thing to expect from him was prolonged silence. And true to form, Makoto quickly reloaded his supporting cast and unleashed his new "hellchild," the Cosmic Inferno, and continued to build upon what is already one of the most unruly catalogs in existence…

This is one of those rare times when you can almost judge a record by its' cover. From the title, Cosmic Connection, and the band's psychedelic logo, to the moody front cover depicting Stoney Curtis in the cosmos, acid blues fans will know to expect something great. Stoney Curtis is no stranger to psychedelic imagery. One of his albums was titled Acid Blues Experience, and the Los Angeles resident/Chicago native has an equally psychedelic-sounding title in Cosmic Conn3ction, which also has psychedelic art work and some psychedelic musical influences to go with that psychedelic-sounding title. But Cosmic Conn3ction isn't psychedelic in a poppy way.
