It could be argued that Creedence Clearwater Revival were the greatest American rock & roll band, and one convincing argument would be that no other of their peers had such a commanding grasp on a variety of American music and could synthesize them in such a bracingly original fashion…

Opening slowly with the dark, swampy "Born on the Bayou," Bayou Country reveals an assured Creedence Clearwater Revival, a band that has found its voice between their first and second album. It's not just that "Born on the Bayou" announces that CCR has discovered its sound – it reveals the extent of John Fogerty's myth-making. With this song, he sketches out his persona; it makes him sound as if he crawled out of the backwoods of Louisiana instead of being a native San Franciscan…

It could be argued that Creedence Clearwater Revival were the greatest American rock & roll band, and one convincing argument would be that no other of their peers had such a commanding grasp on a variety of American music and could synthesize them in such a bracingly original fashion. It's that synthesis that makes a genre-specific compilation like Creedence Country so difficult to pull off – it's hard to single out one strand from that mix, particularly since CCR didn't so much perform country as absorb its influence…

Fantasy Records has discovered many ways to recycle the back catalog of its most successful act, Creedence Clearwater Revival, over the years, and this is one of the more curious examples of how they've repackaged their work. At the Movies features 13 CCR classics that have appeared in major motion pictures, though they're not necessarily big hits…

Creedence Clearwater Revival was an American rock band that recorded and performed from 1959 to 1972 under various names before settling on Creedence Clearwater Revival in 1967. In early songs (“Born On The Bayou”, etc.), CCR created a kind of legend of “simple guys from the good old American South,” which was matched by vocalist John Fogerty’s deliberately blurred pronunciation and the stage persona of the musicians. In the general range of “classic rock” groups, the ensemble, in addition, stood out for its outwardly simple, but masterfully stylized lyrics, rich in social observations and political statements, in particular about the Vietnam War (“Fortunate Son”, “Run Through The Jungle”). Musically, they spanned roots rock, blues rock, southern rock, country rock and blue-eyed soul.
