Due to the similar instrumentation and the free jazz originals by Fred Hess, the quartet on Crossed Paths is a bit reminiscent of Ornette Coleman's early groups. As with Ornette, the mood of the songs serves as the basis for the improvising rather than any set chord patterns. What is different is that Fred Hess is an expressive tenor-saxophonist with his own style (rather than copying Coleman or Dewey Redman) and trumpeter Ron Miles is also quite individual, having more technique than Don Cherry. With bassist Ken Filiano and drummer Matt Wilson contributing stimulating support and interaction, Hess and Miles are both heard in top form, whether blending in ensembles or making individual statements in this explorative but very coherent outing.

It’s about feeling like your fire for something might be slowly fading out, and that it might be your fault. It could be a passion, a relationship, or a specific chapter in your life. It’s that self doubt that can come in waves, and the whole thought process that goes along with that. When you begin to doubt your own direction, it’s easy to assume others around you are doubting you too. Firecracker is about feeling that pressure, anxiety, and paranoia. It’s sort of a strange feeling thinking “the whole world is against me…including me.”

Although he works out of the thematically conservative contemporary Christian pop genre, singer/songwriter and guitarist Derek Webb has an agitator's soul and a flair for the controversial, approaches he uses in his music to force careful thought on vitally important issues. Born on May 27, 1974, in Memphis, TN, Webb attended high school in Texas, and was one of the founding members of the Houston-based Christian pop group Caedmon's Call when they formed in 1993, and he remained with the group through several albums before leaving to go solo in 2003. His first solo project, She Must and Shall Go Free, released that same year, demonstrated Webb's refreshingly maverick and uncompromising approach to Christian music, and the album drew a lot of critical attention, both pro and con. A sophomore effort, I See Things Upside Down, followed in 2004, along with a live album, The House Show.

A project long in the making, Across the Tracks finds tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton pairing with journeyman blues guitarist Duke Robillard for a set of burnished lesser-known standards, ballads, and blues. As Rhode Island natives, Hamilton and Robillard crossed paths early on in their careers, with the younger Hamilton drawing inspiration for his own straight-ahead jazz from Robillard's brand of vintage swing, blues, and R&B.

Portishead may not have invented trip-hop, but they were among the first to popularize it, particularly in America. Taking their cue from the slow, elastic beats that dominated Massive Attack's Blue Lines and adding elements of cool jazz, acid house, and soundtrack music, Portishead created an atmospheric, alluringly dark sound. The group wasn't as avant-garde as Tricky, nor as tied to dance traditions as Massive Attack; instead, it wrote evocative pseudo-cabaret pop songs that subverted their conventional structures with experimental productions and rhythms of trip-hop.
