ECM made history in 1984 with the release of Tabula rasa, the first of the jazz label’s equally influential New Series. Not only did this beloved recording introduce many to the music of Arvo Pärt, but it also clarified producer Manfred Eicher’s classical roots and fed into the likeminded sensibilities Eicher was then bringing with increasing confidence to his groundbreaking approach to jazz. It is therefore appropriate that Pärt, the imprint’s shining star, should be represented here more than any other composer or performer.

2009 two CD set containing a pair of albums from the Country superstar, originally released on the United Artists and Liberty labels at the height of his worldwide popularity between 1976 and 1983. Though Rogers achieved success at the tail end of the '60s with his band The First Edition, it wasn't until he fully crossed over into the Country market that international fame came calling. Ironically, his move away from the Pop charts actually brought him more success once Country Music began to crossover into the same market he had initially given up on. Contains the albums Daytime Friends (1977) and Love Or Something Like It (1978). Both albums were produced by Larry Butler with the cream of Nashville's session musicians, as well as Elvis Presley's backing singers The Jordanaires.

French bass clarinetist Thomas Savy might mistakenly be seen as someone who takes classical music to heart with the concept of a full-blown suite, but be assured he's most interested in neo-bop and modern jazz. With bassist Scott Colley and drummer Bill Stewart, Savy plays a resonant and resounding brand of music, where each section of his suite can easily stand alone, and is coordinated with the other parts. In softer or harder tones, the music is always swinging, as Savy plays simple, rich, and effective melody lines, rarely if ever crossing over into overblown harmonics.

In large part a reworking of Jerry Goldsmith's rejected score for the sci-fi thriller Alien Nation, The Russia House proves a far more potent effort than its mongrel pedigree may suggest. Despite the film's Soviet Union setting, Goldsmith largely eschews Russian musical conventions in favor of a taut, suspenseful approach utterly American in its orientation. Combining sleek electronics with a jazz trio led by saxophonist Branford Marsalis, the composer creates a series of mysterious, archly sophisticated themes simmering with tension. In short, with The Russia House Goldsmith effectively updates the classic espionage formula for the digital era, composing a score as vital and innovative as any in his long and distinguished career. It's an unexpected and under-recognized masterpiece.
