When Sam Cooke signed with RCA Records in 1960, he had already had several hits ("You Send Me," "What A Wonderful World," and "Only Sixteen" among them) on the small independent label Keen Records. He had paid attention to the business sides of things, too, and he signed with RCA because he was allowed to keep control of his song publishing…

Consulting theologians and Bible scholars during the 1990s, photographer, writer, graphic artist, and everyday mystic Lee Cantelon (aka Pennyhead) assembled a small book presenting the words of Jesus Christ (just Jesus' words, not the stuff surrounding them) in a fitting translation called The Words. He did it for the purpose of presenting those words to people who were not "religious" – people who were put off by organized religion or even offended by it…

Few shadows cast as wide as that of a former member of the fold exiting and going on to what can only be described as a contender for the biggest phenomenon in metal. Apart from Exodus, who suffered this fate when their pentatonic scale shredder Kirk Hammett joined the Metallica clan, the only band who can claim to have been afflicted by this fate to a greater degree was the trailblazing power thrashing institution out of Phoenix, Arizona dubbed Flotsam And Jetsam. Despite a long and prolific career following his exodus, the specter of former bassist Jason Newsted has hung over this outfit, to the point where it is rare to have a conversation about the band named from the scattered booty of a seafaring vessel without his name being dropped in the first sentence. Nevertheless, recent years have seen these nautical scavengers overcoming this disposition with a streak of thrash-happy brilliance, of which 2021’s “Blood In The Water” stands as their strongest outing since 1988’s “No Place For Disgrace.”

A true dancehall superstar, the boisterous DJ Elephant Man (aka Energy God) was born O'Neil Bryan in 1974. Overly large ears as a child earned him the nickname "Dumbo Elephant" from his classmates in the Seaview Gardens area of Kingston, Jamaica. Shabba Ranks and Bounty Killer were Seaview residents at the time, and with King Jammy's studio not so far away, Elephant Man had early exposure to dancehall culture. While singing at the gates of Ranks and Jammy's studios, Bounty Killer heard him and suggested forming a group with other Seaview teens. The group was originally called the Seaview Family, but after Bounty Killer had a massive hit with "Big Guns Scare Dem," the name changed to Scare Dem Crew. Scare Dem Crew only released one album but played multiple festivals around Jamaica, giving Elephant Man a chance to refine his on-stage persona. Dancehall night at 1998's Reggae Sumfest was a highlight, with Elephant Man climbing up a television camera crane and delivering his energetic rhymes high above the audience.

The Plague saw Demon moving away from the Devilish themes of their previous two LPs into more socially and politically contentious areas. The introduction of keyboards resulted in a sophisticated and polished sound, and the band's finest songwriting to date. A glorious concept album of intelligent and highly innovative rock music.

Toronto based indie rocker Taylor Knox has released his debut full length record, Love. Following his 2015 debut EP, Lines, Knox looks to expand his song writing and unique style across the length of a full album, making this record a definite hit amongst the city’s hipsters and indie crowd. Opening with “Wishing Well”, I was immediately, and pleasantly, surprised to hear thick, crunching, and fuzzy guitars leading the song in a rhythmic pulse as Knox emerges in a mellow and airy presence. His soft voice is a great contrast to the distortion of the guitars and creates a unique push and pull between modern and retro. Knox’s heavy use of guitars can be heard throughout the album, specifically on tracks like “The Stars”- which includes more crunchy chords, and a handful of funky lines- the dragging heaviness of “Love Love Love”, and The Beatles inspired “Sun”. These are among the strongest tracks on Love– especially the hard hitting blues of “Love Love Love”- largely due to their ability to seamlessly blur the lines between genres to make a slight innovation to the style of indie rock and pop.

A good ten years after the first archival album was published in the mid-1970s, jazz rocker Light Year, who was active in California, was somewhat surprisingly released in autumn 2020 by a second collection with historical recordings of the formation. "Hypernauts of the Absolute Elsewhere" was released like "Reveal The Fantastic" by Green Tree Records from Berlin.
The material to be found on "Hypernauts of the Absolute Elsewhere" is probably the rest of the demo material that the band recorded at the time (or another part - who knows what else is there somewhere; a live cut maybe?). The sound is very good, so it can be assumed that the recordings were made in a recording studio under thoroughly professional conditions…

This album really isn't as bad as you think. It may not be progressive or truly brilliant (i.e. Sugar Tax), but it's total no-brainer: eh, easy to like, easy to listen to. The overall feel of this album is upbeat and joyous. In fact, it's a little TOO happyhappyjoyjoy (almost like Erasure, which i'm not fond of.) If you are looking for a that melancholy synthpop vibe, you won't really find it here. However, this album IS worth your money b/c of the amazing, amazing track "Christine" which will bring you to your knees in tears. Absolutely stunning and i guarantee you will agree. Everyone who has heard "Christine" falls in love with the track.
