A certain naturalism and hard-earned grace run through the compositions and playing of Cyrus Chestnut, the Baltimore-bred modern-mainstream player best known for his work as a resourceful solo pianist and dynamic ensemble leader. Those qualities shine through again on A MILLION COLORS IN YOUR MIND, his first recording as a leader on the HighNote label.

2018 release. The jazz piano trio, a specialism with it's own lineage and admirers, is currently alive and well thanks to the artists here on Kaleidoscope. A keyboard master such as Cyrus Chestnut can imbue this tried-and-true format - whose practitioners range from Jelly Roll Morton to Robert Glasper - with a relevance for today's listeners and expand it's parameters without losing sight of it's historic past. For this recording Cyrus has arranged 8 compositions by the classical pianists W.A. Mozart, Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Eric Satie, taking the classical themes through a series of rhythmic and harmonic turns and twists and subjecting them to a wildly innovative series of transformations. Through it all Cyrus Chestnut emerges as a multi-faceted artist who, using the venerable jazz piano trio format, can refract the past through his own imagination and create something new which is always fresh and exciting.

Jimmy Greene’s new release, "Beautiful Life" on Mack Avenue Records, is a celebration of the life of his 6-year-old daughter, Ana Márquez-Greene, whose life was tragically taken, along with 19 other children and 6 educators, on December 14, 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. In late January 2013, Greene, feeling that “I needed to get back to some sense of routine,” resumed a regimen of practice and composition. Soon thereafter, Norman Chesky, the co-owner of Chesky Records and HDtracks, reached out with an extraordinary offer.

In her debut album for Venus Records of Japan, Sharel is supported by a stellar trio of Cyrus Chestnut, Rufus Reid and Lewis Nash. She choose mostly well-known standards for this album and added her own spin with inventive hooks and arrangements.

Joel Frahm is New York-based saxophonist and recording artist. This album features "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", "Early Autumn" and other love songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Bossa Nova's famous songs romantically and sentimentally tells jazz's attractive tenor saxophone.
