The re-release of The English Concert’s award-winning recording of Corelli’s Op 6 concertos offers a welcome opportunity to reflect on some of the changes in taste that have emerged since 1989. Dinu Lipatti is one of those almost mythical figures of the piano cosmos. His star shone briefly, but with incredible intensity and its lingering aura threatened at times to obscure the view of his playing. Conductor Herbert von Karajan (1908-1989) was repeatedly quoted: It was no longer piano playing, it was music, released from all earthly weight, music in its purest form, in a harmony that can be imparted only by one who was no longer of this world.

Il est considéré unanimement comme le meilleur bluesman français
Son nom est Personne. La presse s'en amuse lorsqu'elle titre un article sur le plus connu des bluesman français. Pourtant Paul Personne est devenu quelqu'un. Au fil des galères, de la vie difficile d'un musicien désireux de faire ce qu'il aime, loin des diktats des maisons de disques, il a su construire une carrière d'artiste authentique !!!

Mauro DAlay was a virtuoso violinist and composer from Parma who acquired great fame and fortune throughout Europe. A contemporary of Vivaldi, who praised his musical skills, DAlay held official positions as a musician, first in Parmas Cathedral and then at the Spanish court of King Philip V, whose wife Elisabetta Farnese gifted DAlay the famous San Lorenzo Stradivarius in 1718, which he kept until his death. Now largely forgotten, this ambitious and dynamic composer wrote sonatas, cantatas and concertos. This album features the world premiere recording of his 12 Violin Concertos, Op. 1, published in 1725; they are composed in the Parmesan style, but with Venetian influences. Parma born violinist Luca Fanfoni recorded these concertos adhering to the instrumentation indicated in the score: principal violin, first violin, second violin, viola, cello and organ. Ensemble Reale Concerto (which counts Fanfonis wife and children among its members) recorded this album during lockdown in 2020.

I can’t help the feeling that Deutsche Grammophon have been keeping their young new signing Alice Sara Ott from us. For reasons best known to themselves, the label released this, her debut disc, in a number of countries in 2008, but held back in the UK until she had a second recording under her belt - of Chopin waltzes (DG 00289 477 8095). The double-whammy debut approach seems to have backfired a little, with many critics finding the Chopin too dry and emotionless and then projecting those criticisms, albeit in a milder form, onto the Liszt.
