Dorothy Donegan, one of the great jazz pianists, was only sporadically documented prior to the mid-'70s. She cut two songs for Bluebird back in 1942; a few scattered numbers for Continental and a few obscure labels; five long out-of-print albums in the 1950s for Jubilee, Capitol, and Roulette; and just one LP during 1962-1974. This retrospective put out on CD by Rosetta is therefore quite valuable. Six of the 15 selections (which skip back and forth between 1953, 1957-1958, 1960-1963, and 1979) were originally released on obscure albums while the other nine performances were never out before. Despite the constant jumping of decades, there is a uniformity to the music, with Donegan often sounding in exuberant form. She explores stride, boogie-woogie, bop, blues, and classical music, sometimes during the same piece. This CD (which has lengthy and informative liner notes) is a perfect introduction to Dorothy Donegan's often-overlooked artistry.

This LP brings together for the first time, HIP HARP and IN A MINOR GROOVE, the two albums recorded in 1958 by the legendary jazz harpist and polistrumentist Dorothy Ashby. Dorothy Ashby had a unique soul jazz harp sound, and although the instrument she used is probably more thought of in terms of bedtime lullabies, she actually makes it swing nicely, and with a soulful sound that draws back to traditions of African stringed instruments. Ashby was part of the same scene as Yusef Lateef, and like Lateef, she managed to use odd instrumentation in new contexts, to get a very unique jazz sound.

Proving they can fit right in with the big boys, Dorothy’s debut album provided a fresh vibe of stunningly addictive hard rock hits lead by namesake Dorothy Martin’s soulfully charming vocals. On first impressions, 28 Days In The Valley has seemingly moved the band from lively and aggressive to a country-esque bluesy record and given that the album artwork reads more like 28daySINthevalley there’s still a lingering hopefulness of that gritty and darker edge that listeners fell in love with on Rock Is Dead.

Hyperion's Romantic Piano Concerto series reaches its 70th album with this program of three concertos by women. The ongoing success of the series suggests that audiences are ready and waiting for wider repertoire, and pianist Danny Driver and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Rebecca Miller deliver a real find here. The Piano Concerto in C sharp minor, Op. 45, of American composer Amy Beach has been performed and recorded, but it's been in search of a recording that captures the autobiographical quality of the work, well sketched out in the booklet notes by Nigel Simeone. Essentially, Beach faced creative repression from her religious mother and to a lesser extent from her husband, who allowed her to compose, but only rarely to perform. These experiences, it may be said, poured out in this towering Brahmsian, four-movement piano concerto, which sets up an unusual quality of struggle between soloists and orchestra. It's this dynamic that's so well captured by Driver and Miller (who happen to be married to each other). Sample the opening movement, which has lacked this quality in earlier performances.
