Steely Dan hadn't been a real working band since Pretzel Logic, but with Aja, Walter Becker and Donald Fagen's obsession with sonic detail and fascination with composition reached new heights. A coolly textured and immaculately produced collection of sophisticated jazz-rock, Aja has none of the overt cynicism or self-consciously challenging music that distinguished previous Steely Dan records. Instead, it's a measured and textured album, filled with subtle melodies and accomplished, jazzy solos that blend easily into the lush instrumental backdrops.

For his third Criss Cross album, pianist Misha Tsiganov presents a nine-tune program of four original compositions and kaleidoscopic arrangements of two Wayne Shorter classics, two Great American Songbook standards, and a Russian folk song. As on Artistry of the Standard Criss 1367) and Spring Feelings (Criss 1384), the St. Petersburg native – a U.S resident since 1993 – teams with trumpeter Alex Sipiagin and tenor saxophonist Seamus Blake, both leaders of multiple Criss Cross dates and internationally renowned practitioners of their respective instruments. Joining Tsiganov for the first time on Playing with the Wind are bassist Matt Brewer (Mythology, Criss 1373, and Unspoken, Criss 1390) and drummer Dan Weiss, who apply their virtuosic chops to Tsiganov's elegant charts with an open, poetic attitude.
Contemporary rock guitar riff inspired songs with delivered with emotional vocals and smart cliche free lyrics, a mixture of rock, blues, and funkin' fun. Think Gary Moore and Joe Bonamassa meet Huey Lewis! A blazing spitfire guitarist with a six-string wall of sound who combines traditional and modern blues influences to create his driving sound and energetic show. Dan Doiron has been addicted to the raw energy of the electric guitar since he formed his first band at age 13 in Port Hood, Cape Breton. In fact some people say they don't recognize him without a guitar strapped on. His unique sound reflects his diverse background in rock, blues and classical guitar.
Dan Hicks was an American Treasure. Since the early 1960’s, Hicks deftly blended elements of Swing, Jazz, Folk and Country music to create a truly unique sound. His lyrics range from the simply sublime to the sublimely ridiculous, all presented with his uniquely skewed and inscrutable touch. Dan’s irresistible sense of rhythm, hip lyrical styling, laid back vocalizing, and infamous on-stage wit lasted well through his final recordings with us at Surfdog Records. So, in celebration of his life and legacy, we pay tribute to Dan with this album (marking the 1-year anniversary of his passing), humbled and proud that we had him in the Surfdog family. Here’s to the music, the laughs, and the wild ride…these are Dan’s GREATEST LICKS!!
With the help of Robert Papst of Dominoe Fame, Dan Lucas has delivered a collection of songs that even the most hardened aor freak couldnt resist. If you havent heard of Dan Lucas before go grab this if you can (its a bit hard to find these days) its worth the money you'll have to pay for believe me!
