Jean-Marie Machado and Dave Liebman play together since 2003. Of this complicity were born two albums: Caminando (on 2008 - Pao Records) and Eternal Moments (on 2010 - Bee Jazz). In 2011, Jean-Marie Machado suggests to Dave Liebman inviting the German bugliste Claus Stötter and the string quartet Psophos; of this meeting was born the Media Luz project. An exceptional musical moment for a dialogue between a magnificent European composer and a great American soloist who draws us a jazzchamber mood.

Dave Liebman's group "EXPANSIONS" has been together for several years, definitely enough time to find a direction as a result of five musical personalities working together, touring and recording. This live recording captures a band "on the run." There is no taking back a note or chord when playing live. Perfect it is not, but full of spirit and risk taking it is. The excitement is palpable from the first notes of the fast paced "JJ" penned by Lieb. Especially interesting are versions of songs that appeared on the last two Whaling City Sound recordings "Samsara" and "The Puzzle." The differing material and sound of the band between the acoustic and electric CDs along with fresh and spontaneous renditions of classic jazz repertoire songs "All Blues" "India" and "Footprints" give the listener a wide palette to delve into.

NEA Jazz Master Dave Liebman has always declared that if he had to name one primary influence and inspiration, it would be John Coltrane. The first time he saw Coltrane at Birdland in February 1962, he was 15 years old. As he recounts in his autobiography, What It Is (as told to yours truly), that was the night he saw the light, though he didn’t realize it for years. “Once you see the light,” he explains, “you can never turn away from it, though you may try. I went to see Coltrane from then on, anytime I could.”

The National Endowment of the Arts’ Jazz Master, Dave Liebman, was born in New York City on September 4th, 1946 during a period of change in jazz, one that has yet to be properly documented by even its most noted musicians, writers, filmmakers, and serious academics. It was a time when Afro-Cuban based dance music and its driving polyrhythms were taking the city, and eventually the country, by storm. At its epicenter was the Machito Afro-Cubans, a big band led by the amazing multi-instrumentalist (clarinet, alto sax, lead trumpet) Mario Bauzá and his brother-in- law Frank Grillo (Machito). Thus Afro-Cuban jazz, the first form of Latin jazz, was born and Afro-Cuban percussion would become part of mainstream jazz in America.

All four have shaped modern jazz during the 1970s and 1980s, and continue to do so today. Fire is a unique and innovative album, recorded in 2016, and released in heavyweight 180gram, gatefold sleeve, and extensive liner notes by Liebman.

The ECM imprint issued Dave Liebman's Lookout Farm, one of the discs in the 70s that helped form my more literate jazz tastes. There was a clerk, Bill Furman, at the Hermosa Beach Platterpuss record shop just off the ocean who knew from music and, as I was grabbing a side by my fave jazz band, Oregon, he handed Lookout to me, smiled, and said "Try this!" He'd never failed me before and certainly didn't there either. Of course, I dug the hell out of it and, returning to the shop the next week, noted that Paul Motian was on the same label, so I picked up Conception Vessel. Had there been any danger I might've leaned into Billboard banalities and Casey Kasem creamsauce, those two LPs and of course the jawdropping Oregon scotched that hideous problem right then and there.

Influential French label Owl was set up in 1976 by photographer Jean-Jacques Pussiau, but it concentrated less on homegrown talent (though it showcased the late Michel Petrucianni) than on reviving overlooked talents and helping celebrated ones find new or rekindled intimacies. Of a current batch of Owl reissues, this 1987 recording led by sometime Miles Davis saxophonist Dave Liebman checks 10 John Coltrane compositions, half with an acoustic band, half with a Miles/Weather Report-like fusion one. Liebman can be as fast-moving and harmonically advanced as the late Michael Brecker, but has his own subtly nuanced tone, skewed intervals (Indian music has been a big influence) and timing. He's tender on an atmospheric Crescent (with Eddie Gomez's bass), After The Rain, and on a yearning Dear Lord (with Jim Beard's strings-like synths), and turns Dahomey Dance into a scything soprano-sax and funk blues. It's wonderful sax, and since Liebman isn't a Coltrane clone, it's also different from the usual tributes - even if the second half shows its age a little.
