Eighty-three or not, saxophonist Lee Konitz never seems to lose his enthusiasm for new musical situations. In this one, he's shooting the breeze with Dave Liebman, a sax master of a later generation (though they were both Miles Davis employees, Konitz for Birth of the Cool in 1948-51, Liebman with the early electric bands in 1972-74) and the versatile pianist Richie Beirach.

As a teenager, when he first caught sight (and sound) of John Coltrane playing at New York’s famous Birdland Club, David Liebman fell instantly in love with jazz. A virtuoso on the soprano sax, and an innovative composer, Lieb’s attachment to jazz has always been something more than musical. The spirit behind the music and the community of musicians and listeners all figure into his life in jazz.

Pianist Richie Beirach and saxophonist Dave Liebman have teamed up on many record dates through the years starting in 1973. This CD reissue, taken from the Japanese Trio label, is a set of duets that are primarily introspective and thoughtful. However, the melodies (mixing together originals and standards) are strong, Liebman's reeds (tenor, soprano and alto flute) provide some variety, and the musical communication is very tight. The date is a sleeper, but listeners who have the patience will find much to enjoy, with the highlights including "Spring Is Here" (featuring Liebman's soprano), Beirach's "Eden," Liebman's tonal distortions on tenor during "Cadeques," and his unaccompanied tenor on "In a Sentimental Mood."

About twenty years ago, award winning saxophonist David Liebman began making a list of rock and pop songs that he loved and wanted to revisit someday, in order to re-create them in a contemporary series of settings that would be consistent with his approach to improvisational music. For a variety of reasons – notably that life intervened – Liebman shelved the “pop project” and went on to follow a wide variety of musical pursuits, from world and classical musical genres to liturgical Jewish music and as we know, jazz of all sorts.

This should have happened a long time ago. Veteran jazz icons Martial Solal and Dave Liebman had never played together before the the Paris jazz club dates that served as a warm-up of sorts for this set, Masters In Bordeaux, recorded at the Jazz And Wine Festival in Bordeaux, France. Paris-based pianist Solal, ninety years old now, began his career in the 1950s, in small groups, big bands, and as a crafter of soundtracks. His style is a freewheeling brew of form and freedom, often stretching the familiar close to the borders of unfamiliarity, with a wit, grace and humor almost unmatched in jazz.

Though a legendary figure from his monumental contributions to the clarinet and soprano saxophone's role in jazz, it was the compositions of Sidney Bechet that inspired master saxophonist David Liebman and guitarist John Stowell to dig deep into his catalog to compile and explore this set of rarely heard gems. Each possessing singular voices themselves that have inspired generations of other performers, Liebman & Stowell have created a very personal and intimate duo project celebrating another giant's work, their conversations making for compelling listening.

In the philosophical tradition of Taoism, "Chi" is the word used to describe the animating force of the universe, the breath of life that permeates all existence. A natural phenomenon, when channeled it can provide a spark to ignite seemingly supernatural powers. In their first meeting as a trio, saxophone great and NEA Jazz Master Dave Liebman and virtuoso percussionists Adam Rudolph and Hamid Drake tap into that spiritual force to create Chi, a transcendent collaboration deeply possessed of fresh inspiration and deep roots, ancient traditions and modern invention.

Kristjan Randalu inhabits the persona of the gallery, and of the paintings themselves, while beckoning Dave Liebman, tempting him step by step. The lighting changes as they walk around, sometimes it's ghostly and candlelit, sometimes bright and confrontational. The canvases are prepared and they play. Liebman has come armed with his own brushes, ready to look at the paintings from new angles as Randalu tilts these well known melodies, sending the pictures spinning and creating a whole new choreography. (…) The music stops. Where have we been? What has changed?
