Complimented by Italian daily newspaper «La Repubblica» for his “stylistically flawless and mimetic piano technique”, Roberto Cominati won the first prize at the “Alfredo Casella” International Competition in Naples in 1991. In 1993 he came to the attention of critics and of the most renowned International concert halls when he won first prize at the “Ferruccio Busoni” Competition in Bolzano. In 1999 he was prized with the “Jacques Stehman” Audience Award by Belgian TV and French TV channel TV5, within the “Reine Elisabeth” Competition in Brussels.

There are recordings which are so obvious that any criticism seems useless, not to say futile. What else can be said about this meeting between a composer and his performer? That Benedetti-Michelangeli's piano is crystalline, pyrotechnic, that his keyboard seems to be adorned with all the most minute nuances of color? No inappropriate mannerisms, points of languor "at the beginning of the century", but a simplicity of expression which makes Debussy a Western brother of the authors of Japanese haikus

Eminent Hungarian pianist and composer Zoltán Kocsis began his studies on piano at the age of five and entered the Béla Bartók Conservatory of Music in Budapest at age nine. At 15 Kocsis transferred to the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, studied composition with Pál Kadosa and György Kurtág, and received his diploma at 19. His appointment to the teaching staff of the Liszt Academy was practically instantaneous. By this time Kocsis was already a seasoned veteran of the concert circuit, making his American debut in 1971 and appearing in London in 1972. Kocsis is known for his participation in summer music festivals around the world, such as in Salzburg, Edinburgh, and at the Prague Spring Festival.

Debussy’s “Iberism” was made to glide, in the fashion of a synecdoche, towards a clear and declared “Guitarism”. However, the Frenchman’s explicit citations of and allusions to the guitar would suffice to support such theses. If Segovia’s most cherished vision saw the guitar as a “miniature orchestra”, Debussy overturned it. In some cases, he treated the orchestra itself as a “great guitar”. In Matin d’un jour de fête, from Ibéria, he makes his request of imitation explicit, through the indication of “quasi chitarra” asking the violinists to hold the instrument under their arms. The same premise applies to the articulation and interpretation of the piano prelude La sérénade interrompue.

Debussy's Etudes are really the only set that deserves to be put beside Chopin's. What makes them so special? Like his, they are truly “practice pieces,” systematically exploring various aspects of keyboard technique. But at the same time, they are poetic works of art, full of fantasy, charm, and musical invention. Uchida's recording is almost universally regarded as the finest version of these works to appear in modern times. Her playing combines effortless virtuosity with pianistic precision, keeping the music's artistic and pedagogical tendencies in a state of exquisite tension. This disc also established Uchida's claim to be recognized as one of the most interesting and talented pianists now active. You need to hear it.

In La mer, he is among the master magicians: subtleties of nuance and timing (previously in short supply) now abound; here is playing of a wholly different order of grace and beauty, not the kind that lingers in passages in danger of becoming too exquisite to bear, nor the kind that parades the score's exoticism.
