Developing Chinese

This book explores the historical, cultural and philosophical contexts that have made anti-poverty the core of Chinese society since Liberation in 1949, and why poverty alleviation measures evolved from the simplistic aid of the 1950s to Xi Jinping’s precision poverty alleviation and its goal of eliminating absolute poverty by 2020.

This book provides a good summary of information from sources otherwise hard to access—from Chinese government documents to African radio broadcasts—and paints a coherent bird’s-eye picture of China’s global presence.

China has been pursuing its national interests recently through the exercise of "soft power," as it projects a nonconfrontational face to the developing world. It is China's rapid economic expansion–and the country's need for natural resources, export markets, and political influence–that has led it to step up its engagement with developing countries in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.
Extensive debate is ongoing in China regarding the source of the country s soft power and its reasons for utilizing it.
