Handel’s second opera for the so-called “rival queens,” Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni, was Admeto, which had its premiere in 1727. Their purported rivalry—created more by the public than by the singers themselves—resulted most famously in the cat fight parodied by John Gay in his Beggar’s Opera of the same year. The operas Handel wrote for these reigning divas are as musically brilliant as any of his other works. But as a result of his attempts to structure dramas that would give absolutely equal value to two leading ladies, the rival-queen operas are dramatically problematic and strain credulity at times, Admeto not excepted.

Hauschka (Volker Bertelmann) is an independent experimental musician based in Düsseldorf, Germany internationally recognized as a 21st century exponent of prepared piano technique, a tradition dating back to late 19th and early 20th century French composer Erik Satie. The piano is prepared when "preparations" (consisting of nearly any conceivably applicable object or material) are inserted between the strings or onto the hammers of the instrument; a wider application of the term takes in all manner of additional modifications that expand the sonic and operative possibilities of the piano. Hauschka has successfully combined the chamber music aspect of prepared piano (see composers Henry Cowell, John Cage, Christian Wolff, Max Richter, Maurice Delage, and Arvo Pärt) with pop, rock, and electronic sensibilities.

Im Vollrausch wird er von Dämonen verfolgt. Er erinnert sich an Japan und bessere Zeiten … Eines Tages steht die Japanerin Yu (Aya Irizuki) vor der Tür. Sie hat sich vor zehn Jahren um Karls Vater Rudi (Elmar Wepper) in Tokio gekümmert, als Karl keine Zeit für ihn hatte. Jetzt ist sie wieder da. Sie möchte das Grab von Rudi sehen und das Haus, in dem er gelebt hat. Widerwillig fährt Karl mit ihr aufs Land, aber er kann sich dem Charme von Yu nicht entziehen. Das Elternhaus steht schon lange leer, die Geschwister sind zerstritten. Yu ruft in den Brunnen vor dem Haus und erklärt Karl, dass dort in der Tiefe die Toten wohnen.
