Bennie Tetrocini (Alden Ehrenreich), de 17 años, llega a Buenos Aires para buscar a su hermano desaparecido hace diez años. Cuando Bennie por fin encuentra a su hermano mayor, el brillante poeta Tetro (Vincent Gallo), se da cuenta de que es todo lo contrario a lo que él esperaba. En lugar de ser el hermano maravilloso que fue el ídolo de su infancia, Tetro es ahora un hombre distante y desilusionado que cambió su nombre, no quiere saber nada de su familia y ya no escribe. Durante el tiempo que Bennie pasa con su hermano y la novia de éste, Miranda (Maribel Verdú), los dos vuelven a vivir las experiencias tormentosas de su pasado y se revela un secreto terrible.

Bernie, dix-sept ans, naïf et frais, arrive à Buenos Aires pour rechercher son frère aîné qui a disparu depuis plus de dix ans en jurant de ne plus jamais revoir sa famille. Cette famille d'Italiens immigrés s'était installée en Argentine, mais depuis le succès du père dominateur Carlo, chef d'orchestre reconnu, elle a déménagé à New York. Quand Bernie retrouve son frère Tetro, écrivain brillant et mélancolique, il n'est pas accueilli à bras ouverts.

Aunque sólo Oso lleva la cuenta, han pasado siete años desde que cayó preso por homicidio y robo a mano armada. Es un hombre parco, impredecible, violento por naturaleza o por necesidad, y es probable que en todos estos años no le haya dicho a nadie lo que oculta en sus silencios y la tristeza de su mirada. Alicia, su hija, cumplía un año el día del asalto y Natalia, su mujer, quizás nunca lo haya perdonado. Ahora, mientras sale a la calle en libertad condicional, Oso piensa que tal vez pueda volver a empezar. El Turco le debe todavía su parte del asalto y a través de un compañero de celda contacta con Gúemes que lo emplea como chofer en su agencia de taxis. Oso a perdido a su mujer que vive ahora con Sergio y su hija apenas lo recuerda, pero Oso está dispuesto a recuperarlas o al menos a reparar los daños. Sa femme Natalia et sa fille Alicia vivent désormais avec Sergio, un chômeur qui s'endette en jouant aux courses. Lorsque Le Turco tente de l'entraîner dans un nouveau " coup ", il comprend que la seule issue possible pour prendre en charge l'avenir de sa fille sera hors la loi.

An engaging mix of crime thriller and family drama, Red Bear tells the story of a fortyish career-criminal known as Oso (‘bear’ in Spanish) (Julio Chavez) who emerges from prison after a seven-year stretch to find his wife Natalia (Soledad Villamil) living with ineffectual, unemployed Sergio (Luis Machin). Long resigned to the terminal breakdown of his marriage, Oso is more concerned about his relationship with his daughter Alicia (Agostina Lage), who was only a baby when he went inside. Oso’s determination to retire from the hazardous criminal life, meanwhile, is sidetracked by the machinations of elderly gangland bigwig Turco (Rene Lavand) - who owes Oso money but insists he takes part in one more job…
