Ce couple en crise va faire la rencontre de Keechie (Shuji Kashiwabara), un être imprévisible qui a développé sa propre philosophie de la vie.

The rise and fall of one of the most important and controversial figures in Ireland's struggle for independence is chronicled in this biographical drama. When a group of Irish rebels staged a six-day siege at Dublin's General Post Office, only one of the leaders was able to escape execution – Eamon De Valera (Alan Rickman), an American citizen of Irish blood. A number of De Valera's followers are sent to prison, and one of them, Michael Collins (Liam Neeson), walked out of jail convinced that a new approach was needed to free his homeland from British rule. With his compatriot Harry Boland (Aidan Quinn), Collins formed the Irish Volunteers, who used a combination of terrorist violence and guerilla warfare to attack the British where their defenses were weakest, and employed espionage and a key inside informant (Stephen Rea) to learn what the British planned to do next – and what they knew about Collins and his supporters…

Não aceitam esse lugar e é por isso que não o ocupam. Mas não têm nenhum outro. São sobreviventes. São os mutantes portugueses, mas também existem mutantes em todos os lugares. Talvez o mundo preferisse que eles não existissem, mas eles existem. Ao longo de todo o filme, eles sonham, choram, riem, têm filhos, morrem, fogem.

A Brooklyn cigar shop is the setting for this drama from director Wayne Wang that interweaves the stories of several characters that have fractured family relationships in common. Harvey Keitel is Auggie Wren, poetic owner of the Brooklyn Cigar Company, a store that he considers the center of the world – a place where all of humanity eventually parades through. One of his regular customers is Paul Benjamin (William Hurt), a writer and a broken shell of a man whose pregnant wife was shot and killed near the store. When Paul's life is saved one day by a young black man named Rashid (Harold Perrineau, Jr., the writer and his rescuer strike up a friendship and begin searching for Rashid's long-lost father (Forest Whitaker). At the store, Auggie is surprised by the appearance of Ruby (Stockard Channing), an ex-girlfriend who informs him that her pregnant, drug-addicted daughter Felicity (Ashley Judd) may also be his – and is in dire need of help. Screenwriter Paul Auster based the script for Smoke on a 1990 short story he wrote for "The New York Times." L'écrivain Paul Benjamin vient chaque jour acheter ses cigares chez Auggie qui tient un bureau de tabac au coeur de Brooklyn. Un jour, Paul est sauvé de la mort par un jeune noir. Pour le remercier, il propose au garçon de l'héberger quelques jours. Mais celui-ci lui cache sa réelle identité et finit par partir en laissant chez Paul une importante somme d'argent… Auggie et Paul décident de le retrouver.

In a world of six billion people, it only takes one to change your life. Sixty-two-year-old Walter Vale is sleepwalking through his life. Having lost his passion for teaching and writing, he fills the void by unsuccessfully trying to learn to play classical piano. When his college sends him to Manhattan to attend a conference, Walter is surprised to find a young couple has taken up residence in his apartment. Victims of a real estate scam, Tarek, a Syrian man, and Zainab, his Senegalese girlfriend, have nowhere else to go. In the first of a series of tests of the heart, Walter reluctantly allows the couple to stay with him. Touched by his kindness, Tarek, a talented musician, insists on teaching the aging academic to play the African drum. The instrument's exuberant rhythms revitalize Walter's faltering spirit and open his eyes to a vibrant world of local jazz clubs and Central Park drum circles. As the friendship between the two men deepens, the differences in culture, age and temperament fall away. After being stopped by police in the subway, Tarek is arrested as an undocumented citizen and held for deportation. When Tarek's beautiful mother Mouna arrives unexpectedly in search of her son, the professor's personal commitment develops into an unlikely romance. Professeur d'économie dans une université du Connecticut, Walter Vale, la soixantaine, a perdu le goût de l'enseignement et mène désormais une vie routinière. Il tente de combler le vide de son existence en apprenant le piano, mais sans grand succès… Lorsque l'Université l'envoie à Manhattan pour assister à une conférence sa vie va basculer. Il rencontre Tarek, d'origine syrienne, et sa petite amie sénégalaise Zainab (jeune couple qui s'est installé dans l'appartement qu'il possède là-bas : victimes d'une escroquerie immobilière, Tarek et Zainab n'ont nulle part ailleurs où aller ; d'abord un rien réticent, Walter accepte de laisser les deux jeunes gens habiter avec lui). Tarek musicien doué, insiste pour lui apprendre à jouer du djembé. Tandis que les deux hommes deviennent amis, les différences d'âge, de culture et de caractère s'estompent. Lorsque Tarek, immigré clandestin, est arrêté par la police dans le métro, puis menacé d'expulsion, Walter va tout mettre en œuvre pour venir en aide à son ami…

A love letter to movies (and the French new wave of the 1960s in particular), Bernardo Bertolucci's The Dreamers starts with a 1968 riot outside of a Parisian movie palace then burrows into an insular love triangle. Matthew (Michael Pitt, Hedwig and the Angry Inch), an expatriate American student, bonds with a twin brother and sister, Isabelle (Eva Green) and Theo (Louis Garrel), over their mutual love of film–they not only quote lines of dialogue, they act out small bits and challenge each other to name the cinematic source. Matthew suspects the twins of incest, but that doesn't stop him from falling into his own intimacies with Isabelle. As the threesome becomes threatened, Paris succumbs to student riots. The Dreamers aspires to be kinky, but the results are more decorative than decadent; nonetheless, the movie's lively energy recalls the careless and vital exuberance of Godard and Truffaut.
