Composed between 1929 and 1931, Ravel’s two piano concertos reflect his enthusiasm for jazz, though one that was thoroughly absorbed into his own idiom. The Concerto in G major, originally conceived as a Basque rhapsody, is lightly scored but sports a vivacious percussion section, galvanizing motor rhythms and a slow movement of astonishing beauty. The Concerto for the Left Hand, commissioned by Paul Wittgenstein who had lost his right arm in the First World War, is a single movement tour de force, as is Tzigane, a gypsy violin showpiece of dazzling virtuosity.

When the Russian designer and architect Viktor Hartmann died unexpectedly of an aneurysm in 1873, Mussorgsky fell into a state of profound depression. The two artists had grown close. A memorial exhibition was quickly planned, and over four hundred of Hartmann’s works were displayed. Some of the paintings and sketches exhibited were the source of inspiration for Mussorgsky as he set out to compose “Pictures at an Exhibition,” a suite of brief movements penned in June 1874 – three months after the exposition took place.

Ci sono alcune idee portanti della civiltà occidentale che ci appaiono del tutto ovvie e naturali. Ma, se le osserviamo da vicino e nel contesto delle altre civiltà, scopriamo che esse hanno addirittura un carattere eccezionale ed eccentrico. Due fra queste idee sono indicate dai termini individuo ed eguaglianza. Louis Dumont si è proposto di mostrare appunto la peculiarità di tali idee, il loro formarsi, le loro implicazioni. Questo ampio disegno comprende «Homo hierarchicus» (1966) e i due volumi di «Homo aequalis». Nel pensiero di Dumont la polarità gerarchia/eguaglianza ha una funzione fondatrice, ma dietro di essa se ne distingue un'altra: olismo/individualismo. Tra le società che conosciamo, l'individualismo moderno si presenta come un caso unico, articolato però in forme diverse.
