Kondrashin's recording of Dvorak's ''New World'' symphony is a standard-setter, both as a performance and as a recording. Rarely has this work been made to sound not only beautiful, but so natural and inevitable as well; there is no obvious striving after musical effect, and the symphony's parts meld into an unusually coherent whole. As for the recording, this was one of the first to be made on a digital recorder (in late 1979), yet it remains among the most natural-sounding discs yet made. I cannot recommend this disc too highly! (Amazon customer's review)

During his time with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra (SWR) Roger Norrington succeeded in an ambitious project: His performances with a modern symphony orchestra were to be based on historically informed performance practices. The results were enlightening and inspiring, not least on this Dvoák album. Sir Roger Norrington is among the most renowned conductors of our time. He celebrates his 85th birthday in March 2019.

A great and fiery recording of Dvorak's last symphony by Fricsay and the RIAS Symphony Orchestra. Not to be confused with his later stereo remake with the Berlin Philharmonic.

These accounts are quite magnificent, and their claims on the allegiance of collectors remain strong. Their freshness and vigour remind one of what it was like to hear these symphonies for the first time. The atmosphere is authentic in feeling and the sense of nature seems uncommonly acute. Kubelík has captured the enthusiasm of his players and generates a sense of excitement and poetry. The playing of the Berlin Philharmonic is marvellously eloquent and, as is often the case, a joy in itself. The woodwinds phrase with great poetic feeling and imagination, and all the departments of this great orchestra respond with sensitivity and virtuosity.

Coming as it does after disappointingly turgid readings of Brahms' four symphonies with the London Philharmonic, Marin Alsop's powerful recording of Dvorák's Ninth with the Baltimore Symphony is a surprise.

Dvořák: Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” - New York Philharmonic; Leonard Bernstein (repost)

There's no such thing as a "definitive" recording, but if there were, this one would come close to that imagined ideal. Its special qualities haven't dimmed a bit in the four decades since it was recorded, and every interpretive decision comes across with the inevitability of fate itself… If you don't own this performance in some form, then you don't know the "New World". –David Hurwitz

Antonín Dvořák’s Ninth Symphony, composed in New York, presents itself as colourful, yearning, with a somewhat exotic touch – an inspired fusion of American impressions and symphonic music. In an exciting juxtaposition, Gustavo Dudamel will also conduct John Adams’s City Noir. Here too there is a fascinating mixture of styles, this time between classical music and jazz of the 1940s and 1950s.
