Although best known for the AOR and radio hits from the early 1980s (which included the number ones 'Keep On Loving You' and 'Can't Fight This Feeling'), R.E.O. Speedwagon's long history goes way back to their formation in Champaign, Illinois in 1967. Initially a covers band playing bars and fraternity houses, the initial line-up of Neal Doughty on keyboards, Alan Gratzer on drums and vocals, Joe Matt on guitar and vocals and Mike Blair on bass and vocals, named themselves after the R.E.O. Speed Wagon, a model of American flat-bed truck. By the time they came to record their debut LP for Epic Records in 1971, the line-up had settled around Terry Luttrell on lead vocals, driving force Gary Richrath on guitar and Gregg Philbin on bass, joining Neal Doughty and Alan Gratzer. Although guitarist Gary Richrath has long been an important and influential figure in the songwriting and musical direction of the band, by the release of second LP, "R.E.O./T.W.O.", the band were joined by Kevin Cronin on lead vocals.

Super group Crosby, Stills & Nash propelled to mainstream success with their timeless vocal harmonies, stunning production and masterful songwriting. "CSN" finds the trio soaking in soulful ballads that showcase their artistic growth. The album would reach #2 on the Billboard 200, only behind Fleetwood Mac’s mega hit Rumours. Each member is well represented as they produce the massive tunes “Just A Song Before I Go”, “Fair Game” and “Anything At All”. The production has been compared to legendary albums including the Eagles’ "Hotel California" and Fleetwood Mac’s "Rumours". The album has stood the test of time and remains an utterly enjoyable listen.

Albert Collins, "The Master of the Telecaster," "The Iceman," and "The Razor Blade" was robbed of his best years as a blues performer by a bout with liver cancer that ended with his premature death on November 24, 1993. He was just 61 years old. The highly influential, totally original Collins, like the late John Campbell, was on the cusp of a much wider worldwide following via his deal with Virgin Records' Pointblank subsidiary. However, unlike Campbell, Collins had performed for many more years, in obscurity, before finally finding a following in the mid-'80s.

An explosive effort that every fan should have! The Misfits - Box Set is a coffin-shaped CD package that exhaustively covers all the releases the late-'70s/early-'80s version of the group put out (the exception being Walk Among Us due to a label-rights situation). The first 2 discs feature, respectively, the material on the 2 collection releases and Legacy of Brutality, Evilive, and Earth A.D.. The third compiles a slew of different demo and recording sessions, including the original trio lineup (with Danzig on electric piano). The fourth presents the planned-but-never-released-as-such Static Age for the first time. The accompanying booklet features a great band history from then-roadie/photographer and future Danzig bassist Eerie Von, complete lyrics for every song, a slew of amazing photographs from concerts and other shoots, and an exhaustive discography.

This collection retailed for $100.00 when first released in 1993. There has never been a better collection of Rock Classics - probably never will be, what with the difficulties of gaining clearances and gathering the best materials. The seven CDs are divided into the years covered: 1967-69; 1969-70; 1971-73; 1973-77; 1977-82; 1982-86; 1986-92. Enclosed in each CD is a booklet with a capsule history of the music and a complete artist/title list. All of which contain from 15 to 17 tracks, for a total of 110.

Often referred to as the UK’s answer to The Band or The Eagles, Meal Ticket were a formidable force on the booming Pub Rock circuit of the mid 70’s. This 3 CD box set features each of their albums – “Code Of The Road”, “Three Times A Day” and “Take Away” – two of which had not previously been issued on CD. Two rare live B-sides have been added which, along with singles such as ‘Simple’, ‘Yesterday’s Music’, ‘The Shape I’m In’ and ‘Blame’, give a complete round-up of all of the band’s released material for EMI International and Logo Records. Michael Heatley, editor of “History Of Rock” and long-time champion of Meal Ticket, has provided insightful sleeve-notes in conjunction with the band. As well as the three albums in replica card wallets, the box also contains a 20 page booklet. Mastered from the original tape source by James Bragg.

Rhino's fine 16-track collection Used Songs (1973-1980) chronicles Tom Waits' first seven albums, all recorded for Asylum Records. This contains pretty much all his staples from the '70s – "Heartattack and Vine," "Burma Shave," "Ol' 55," "Jersey Girl," "(Looking For) The Heart of Saturday Night," and "Tom Traubert's Blues" among them – sequenced not chronologically, but sequenced for maximum impact. Given the sheer amount of music Waits made for Asylum, it shouldn't be surprising that there are some fan favorites missing, but there are no complaints with what is here, and this provides a near-perfect encapsulation of his pre-Island years, especially for those only familiar with the Island recordings.
