The Fall of a Great American City is the story of what is happening today in New York City and in many other cities across America. It is about how the crisis of affluence is now driving out everything we love most about cities: small shops, decent restaurants, public space, street life, affordable apartments, responsive government, beauty, idiosyncrasy, each other. This is the story of how we came to lose so much—how the places we love most were turned over to land bankers, billionaires, the worst people in the world, and criminal landlords—and how we can - and must - begin to take them back.

Italian pianist Maria Chiara Argirò’s album firmly falls into the contemporary Jazz camp and if you’re able to leave your prejudices aside, you’ll find a very beautiful album that will reap you rich rewards once you get into it. It has a strong, contemporary, urban, pulse that runs through it and, to my mind, also draws on some of the pastoral traditions of Folk. That it also manages to do this whilst remaining, on the whole, upbeat and absorbing in equal measure, is testimony to the skill of the composer and her collaborators.

Every now and then I’ve been fortunate enough to come across an album which, in that too-brief moment of listening, time seems to stand still. Julie Murphy’s Every bird that flies is one such album; a record of such quiet beauty it takes your breath away. Recorded over three days at Mwnci Studios in West Wales, pared down to a minimum of instruments and musicians – primarily Julie, who plays piano and sings, with contributions from Ceri Owen Jones (trombone) and Aidan Thorne (double bass) – it’s an album which centres artistic expression, creative freedom and social justice concerns.
