The recording is first rate. The strings sound luscious and, when called upon, translucent. The bass is ample (good bass drum impact), with double basses clear enough that their many rapid scales keep up with those in the winds and upper strings. This feat is heard rarely on many LPs. LSC 1901 is worth owning for the pure pleasure the brilliant string ensemble provides and for Monteux’s deeply moving interpretation.

These late era analogue recordings are likely to be well known to many who collected LPs in the 1970s although they will not be quite as familiar as the contents of some of the other GROC series discs.
These are stereo ADD recordings. In the case of the Britten Sinfonia and the Grimes episodes the recordings derive from an LP first issued in dual compatible stereo and SQ quad. That LP was a celebrated hi-fi artefact with the clean satin openness of the LSO strings almost as impressive as the crashingly captured climaxes, growling, thunderous and metallic. Every sound is accommodated in a grand acoustic.

"A Night at the Opera" is the fourth studio album by the British rock band Queen. The album takes its name from the Marx Brothers film of the same name, which the band watched one night at the studio complex when recording. Queen employed a complex production that extensively used multitrack recording, and the songs incorporated a wide range of styles, such as ballads, music hall, dixieland, hard rock and progressive rock influences. Aside from their usual equipment, Queen also utilised a diverse range of instruments such as a double bass, harp, ukulele and more.

EVOL was a major leap forward for Sonic Youth, but Sister is a masterpiece, demonstrating the group's rapidly evolving musicality. It's one of the singular art rock records of the '80s, surpassed only by Sonic Youth's next album, Daydream Nation.
