John Coltrane's debut for the Impulse label was a bit unusual, for the great tenor and his quartet were joined by a medium-sized backup group on Eric Dolphy arrangements of "Africa," "Greensleeves," and "Blues Minor." "Africa" in particular is quite memorable although Coltrane would not pursue any further recordings in this direction in the future, making this a change of pace in his discography. Allmusic 4.5*/5
Maurice Abravanel conducts the Utah Symphony Orchestra performing Louis Moreau Gottschalk's A Night In the Tropics, Gottschalk's Grand Tarentelle for Piano and Orchestra arranged by Hershy Kay and featuring Reid Nibley on piano, and Morton Gould's Latin American Symphonette.
"Both [Gottschalk] scores get the full treatment from Abravanel and his forces…As Abravanel leaves these well behind." - HIFI /Stereo Review.
Gershwin’s instrumental masterpiece is the brief Rhapsody in Blue, written first for solo piano (not by Gershwin, who reportedly could neither read nor write music notation) then orchestrated in several versions by its commissioner, band leader Paul Whiteman. The work is a brief and effective encyclopaedic showcase for the rhythmic and instrumental trademarks of the "jazz" style. Fiedler’s performance of the arrangement for symphony orchestra is one of the most effective.(Paul Shoemaker - MusicWeb)
Todd Rundgren brought in legendary backup vocal duo Flo & Eddie as well as a cellist, two horn players, and himself on keyboards. The end result is simply fantastic, fusing the post-punk charge of the first two albums with a new synth-based approach that works wonders.
There is no question that the Viennese stamp of genuineness has remained indelibly in Reiner's readings of the music of Vienna. And it is no coincidence that in Chicago, where the orchestra was founded by Theodore Thomas and led for many years by the late Frederick Stock, the spirit of Vienna is perpetuated by several Viennese-trained members of the orchestra.( Joseph Wechsberg )
If you think Back to Black is brilliant, wait until you hear Frank! Soul and Jazz stylings meet together here and the end result is magnificent.
This is an album of real beauty and synergy between Green and pianist Sonny Clark, who along with Sam Jones on bass and Louis Hayes on drums rounds out the quartet.
L'Homme à tête de chou (Cabbage-Head Man), featuring the new character Marilou and sumptuous orchestral themes. Cabbage-Head Man is one of his nicknames, as it refers to his ears. Musically, L'homme à tête de chou turned out to be Gainsbourg's last LP in the English rock style he had favoured since the late 1960s.
This is a great album with the classic synergy of Green and pianist Sonny Clark, who along with Sam Jones on bass and Art Blakey complete the quartet. Just classic Green.
